Job Description

The Nebraska Department of Labor is seeking an Accountant III for their Accounting & Finance team. This individual will work as part of a high functioning team to direct, implement, and modify policies, procedures, instructions, and manuals relating to the accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting functions of the agency.

In cooperation with others, determine strategies to correct compliance issues and the overall accounting structure. Review reconciliations on a monthly basis for proper and correct balances to support closing the books in a timely fashion.

Examples of Work

  • Pre-audit and post entries on a daily basis
  • Review monthly account reconciliation
  • Prepare & review federal reporting
  • Manage payments between states
  • Serve as back up for business unit creation for grant purposes
  • Provide backup functions to other staff within the Accounting unit
  • Special projects as assigned

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, statistics, business administration or related field; OR Associates degree in accounting, finance, statistics, business administration or related field and two years’ experience with professional accounting procedures; OR four years’ experience with professional accounting procedures including developing public accounting systems, modifying public accounting systems, and financial management consultation.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Prior participation in a team environment, skilled with business math, flexible and adaptable, problem solving, and can manage multiple priorities. Experience with multiple accounting systems, self-development, customer service, advanced Excel, and process improvement.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of: professional accounting principles, theories and practices; generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), practices and standards; budgeting techniques and methods; project management procedures; research practices and techniques; record keeping methods; federal and State laws and regulations applicable to accounting/finance operations; computerized accounting software.
  • Skill in: using mathematical methods or formulas to compare, analyze and present data; compiling data from multiple sources into a single, comprehensive document or report.
  • Ability to: apply the principles of accounting, statistics, and fiscal management; learn and apply the principles and concepts of specific agency programs, policies and operating details of an accounting system; design reports and financial statements; compute and compile financial data involving the use of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages and fractions; operate office equipment such as personal computers, photocopiers and desk calculators; manage funds and provide financial and budget recommendations; analyze data and draw conclusions; organize and present facts and opinions so others will understand; effectively communicate to exchange and elicit information.

Location: NDOL Administration Building, 550 South 16th Street, Lincoln (On-Site)

Work Schedule

Work Schedule: 8am - 5pm; Monday - Friday
