Los Alamos National Laboratory · Los Alamos, NM · 2 mo ago
EngineeringFull-time

About the Role

Seeking a strongly self-motivated Research and Development Engineer to join the AOT-MDE Engineering Team. This team is responsible for a wide variety of accelerator components and system designs, including cooling water, vacuum systems, and magnets. The selected candidate will support diagnostics systems along the LANSCE accelerator, such as beam position monitors, harps, stripper foil insertion system design, wire scanners, current monitors, emittance actuators, deflectors, diffusers, and beam plugs.

The successful candidate will design and analyze these systems, as well as direct maintenance and improvement projects for the LANSCE accelerator diagnostics systems. The role may also involve supporting other ongoing work within AOT-MDE, including structural or thermohydraulic projects with experimental validation. Proficiency with CAD tools for design and analysis is critical.

Responsibilities

  • Design and analyze diagnostics systems, including beam position monitors, harps, stripper foil insertion systems, wire scanners, current monitors, emittance actuators, deflectors, diffusers, and beam plugs.
  • Direct maintenance and improvement projects for LANSCE accelerator diagnostics systems.
  • Support structural and thermohydraulic projects, often leading to experimental validation.
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and technicians to ensure effective communication and project execution.
  • Provide engineering support to other teams in the group, including Water, Vacuum, and Mechanical systems.
  • Ensure all work is performed safely and securely, adhering to established protocols.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and experience with all types of diagnostics devices, particularly those translated into positions.
  • Detailed knowledge of mechanical systems and components.
  • Experience with electrical drive systems and wired sensor devices.
  • Proven track record of contributing to high-impact R&D projects through design, analysis, prototyping, fabrication, and documentation.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings drafted using ASME Y14.5 standards.
  • Proficiency with CAD and CAM software, specifically SolidWorks.
  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment and exhibit collaborative behavior.
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
