Accelerator Beam Line Diagnostics Technician (Engineered Systems Tec 2/3)

About the Role

The Mechanical Design Engineering Group in Accelerator Operations and Technology Division (AOT-MDE) provides mechanical engineering support for accelerator technology challenges in service of the laboratory's national security mission. This position supports the LANSCE Accelerator Facility's mechanical systems, including 24/7 beam operation, which may require work at odd hours and on-call duties. The successful candidate will join the Mechanical Diagnostics Team, responsible for approximately 200 electro-mechanical diagnostic devices of about 30 different types, such as wire scanners, beam current monitors, and beam emittance measurement tools.

This role involves troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing, and rebuilding the mechanical and electrical systems of these devices to support accelerator operations and related projects. The position may be filled at either the Diagnostics Technician 2 or 3 level, depending on the candidate's skills.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot, maintain, repair, and rebuild mechanical and electrical systems of accelerator diagnostic devices.
• Follow instructions closely and consult supervisors or senior technicians when needed.
• Work collaboratively with team members and personnel outside the group.
• Communicate effectively with scientists, engineers, and technicians.
• Maintain focus and productivity for extended periods.

• Mount micron-thick fibers and foils onto frames, requiring steady hands, good vision, and attention to detail.

• Support 24/7 accelerator operations, including occasional overtime and on-call duties.

Requirements

Engineered Systems Technician 2:

• Experience working on mechanical and electrical systems.
• Experience using mechanical tools and precision measuring devices (e.g., calipers, micrometers).
• Experience with soldering techniques and electrical wiring.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings.
• Capability to work in radiation areas while adhering to ALARA principles.
• Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate effectively with scientists, engineers, and technicians.

Engineered Systems Technician 3 (additional requirements):

• Experience in electro/mechanical assembly, fabrication, and maintenance of mechanical and electronic equipment.
• Demonstrated experience using electrical test equipment (e.g., multi-meters, AC/DC power supplies).
• Applied knowledge of vacuum technology principles.
• Experience with standard machining operations (e.g., turning, milling, drilling, grinding) and hand tools.

Qualifications

Engineered Systems Technician 2: High School Diploma and 3 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Engineered Systems Technician 3: Associate's Degree and 3 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Skills

• Experience working with intricate and detailed mechanical, pneumatic, and electronic assemblies.
• Fabrication of mechanical parts from sketches, formal drawings, or oral instructions.
• Design, fabrication, and/or maintenance of accelerator equipment.
• Experience using optical tooling such as alignment telescopes.
• Certified IPC Specialist (IPC J-STD-001) for soldered electrical and electronic assemblies.
• Knowledge and experience working in an accelerator facility or similar technology.
• Ability to acquire a Q-level security clearance (U.S. citizenship required).

Pay

• Engineered Systems Technician 2: $54,900 - $84,300
• Engineered Systems Technician 3: $66,100 - $103,600

Schedule

• Supports 24/7 accelerator operations, including occasional overtime and on-call duties.
• Work may involve odd hours as required.

Work Environment

The work location is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. Regular appointment employees must serve a 1-year commitment in their current position to be eligible for other Laboratory jobs.

This position requires a Q-level security clearance, which necessitates U.S. citizenship except in rare circumstances. Selected applicants will undergo a background investigation.
