About the Role

This position delivers high-quality academic coaching for students needing additional assistance in Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry. Designed to enhance students’ understanding of subject matter, improve study skills, and contribute to overall academic achievements, the role provides walk-in academic coaching in the WCTC Science Center.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic coaching services to students in specific subject areas, assisting them in understanding and mastering course content, assignments, and projects.
  • Assist students in developing effective study techniques, time management, note-taking, test preparation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills while promoting independent learning and self-efficacy.
  • Familiarize students with available educational resources, including the library, online materials, and academic support services.
  • Refer students to appropriate campus resources, such as academic advisors, career services, or counseling.
  • Provide communication and feedback to instructors and academic support staff regarding student progress and common areas of difficulty.
  • Stay current with effective academic coaching techniques, specific discipline content, and pedagogical trends.
  • Provide assistance in training new coaches.
  • May assist with program recruitment efforts, such as semi-annual Open House events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a closely related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Training and teaching experience in an educational setting required.
  • Previous teaching experience required.

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of Biology on at least a baccalaureate level.
  • Understanding of pedagogy; knowledge of working with students with learning differences preferred.
  • Proficiency in using educational technology and online resources for coaching sessions.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, both in one-on-one and group instruction situations.
  • Ability to think critically by applying problem-solving practices.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills—oral, written, technical, and non-technical information, and listening.
  • Strong customer service skills, working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues.
  • Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and/or with minimal supervision.
  • Basic proficiency with computer software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, publishing, and learning management systems.

Schedule

Up to 20 hours per week; varies by term assignment. Friday availability preferred.
