Academic and Support Counselor

About the role

The Part-Time Academic and Support Counselor provides academic, behavioral, and mental health services to students in grades 6–12. The position delivers Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 support within the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework and serves as a consistent trusted adult through a structured mentor program. This role supports the District and school-based initiatives focused on student attendance, engagement, behavioral health/well-being, and removal of barriers to learning in alignment with grant requirements.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct mental and behavioral health services at Tier 1 (universal), Tier 2 (targeted/small group), and Tier 3 (intensive/individualized), including crisis intervention as appropriate.
• Serve as a mentor for identified students.
• Monitor attendance, academic performance, and behavioral data to inform intervention planning.
• Develop and implement individualized academic and behavioral support plans.
• Cook up tutoring, academic interventions and credit recovery support as needed.
• Address truancy concerns and assist in removing non-academic barriers to learning.
• Collaborate with administrators, counselors, social workers, teachers and other staff to implement structured support.
• Engage parents/guardians in the intervention process in accordance with district policies and procedures.
• Provide case management services and referrals to appropriate community agencies.
• Utilize research-based and evidence-informed practices in service delivery.
• Maintain documentation and data required for grant compliance, program evaluation, and District/state reporting.
• Participate in professional learning, required meetings, and ongoing training related to the role.
• Ensure compliance with federal and state laws, ethical standards, Board policies, and grant requirements.
• Maintain regular, predictable attendance and perform other duties as assigned.
• Complete all job assignments in a timely, accurate and professional fashion.

Requirements

• Master’s degree or higher with proper certification in School Social Work, School Counseling, School Psychology, or a closely related field as required by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.
• Three (3) or more years of experience as an educator or school-based mental health professional.
• Experience providing school-based mental or behavioral health services to adolescents and knowledge of MTSS, attendance interventions, trauma-informed practices, and evidence-based mental health supports preferred.
• Hold valid Georgia Motor Vehicle operator’s license with endorsements compatible with assigned duties and an acceptable motor vehicle record as determined by the district.
