Position Title
Job Duties
The College of Community Engagement and Professions (CCEP) Student Advising & Support Services (SASS) Academic Advisor will interact directly with prospective and current undergraduate, graduate, certificate, second degree, post-baccalaureate and teacher certification students.
Working as part of the CCEP SASS team, the Academic Advisor will provide wrap-around student services for the academic program array of CCEP to ensure the College meets its enrollment, retention and graduation goals and to provide overall satisfaction with the CCEP student experience at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
The CCEP Academic Advisor engages students in decision making processes and promotes appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters such as course selection and degree requirements. Maintains appropriate confidentiality, updates student advising records, and contributes to the development and delivery of academic advising related events and programs.
Works to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Serves as a main point of contact for students regarding educational, course and degree options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
- Receive, process, and respond to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
- Work with undergraduate, graduate, post- baccalaureate and teacher certification students in the College of Community Engagement and Professions
- Develop expertise in specific, position-related curricula and student supports or opportunities
- Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
- Proactively engage students as needed
- Regularly consult with other advisors and program directors on student issues
- Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum

The College of Community Engagement and Professions (CCEP) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) is comprised of the School of Education, Helen Bader School of Social Welfare, and School of Information Studies. Compensation
$55,000-65,000/annually depending on level.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher
- At least one (1) year of professional academic advising experience in higher education working directly with students
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree or higher
- Experience advising graduate students
- 3+ years of advising experience at UWM or a similar institution
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, as evidenced by written application materials and interviews (where applicable)
- Experience building positive relationships with diverse populations
- Prior experience in higher education, particularly in areas related to Education, Teacher Licensure, Social Work and Criminal Justice
Additional Information
The work of this position will be performed primarily on-site, at UWM’s main campus.
