About the role

Location: Oakland, CA. You're the tech other techs bring the hard ones to — the intermittent no-start, the network fault two other shops gave up on. You're good, you're productive, and you want to be paid like it without working Saturdays.

Costa Auto Care and Tire is a family-owned independent shop serving Oakland for over 40 years. The owner came up as a diagnostic tech, so your diag work is understood here, not second-guessed.

Why work here:

  • Technician-Led Understanding: The owner has a professional background in automotive diagnostics and understands the time and expertise required to solve challenging problems.
  • Established Reputation: Family-owned since 1984, with more than four decades serving the Oakland community.
  • Quality-Focused Repairs: Repair recommendations are based on documented vehicle inspection findings rather than predetermined mileage-based service packages.
  • Professional Standards: AAA Approved automotive repair facility with a written parts and labor guarantee.
  • Advanced Equipment: Access to professional diagnostic tools, technical support, and digital inspection systems.
  • Supportive Team: Work alongside a small, established team where collaboration, mentorship, and quality workmanship are valued.
  • Career Growth: Opportunity to develop into a Shop Foreman role.
  • Work-Life Balance: Full-time Monday–Friday schedule with weekends off.

Advanced diagnostic equipment and technology provided:

  • Pico Automotive Oscilloscope — Advanced electrical testing and waveform analysis
  • ATS eScan Elite — Drivability diagnostics
  • TOPDON Phoenix Max — Advanced automotive scan tool
  • Autoland — Automotive diagnostic scan tool
  • Opus IVS DrivePro — Remote diagnostic support
  • Shift — Inspection and diagnostic management software
  • AutoVitals — Digital vehicle inspections
  • Tekmetric — Shop management software

Technicians bring their own tools and have access to the shop's additional diagnostic equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair complex automotive electrical systems, drivability concerns, intermittent problems, and CAN bus/network communication faults.
  • Perform accurate diagnostics and general automotive repairs across a wide variety of vehicle makes and models.
  • Utilize advanced scan tools, oscilloscopes, wiring diagrams, and factory-level diagnostic procedures to identify and resolve vehicle concerns.
  • Complete thorough digital vehicle inspections (DVIs), including clear photographs, accurate findings, and detailed repair recommendations.
  • Verify completed repairs through quality-control inspections, diagnostic confirmation, and road testing when necessary.
  • Maintain a production goal of 50–52 flagged hours within a 40-hour workweek while prioritizing repair accuracy and workmanship.
  • Collaborate with service advisors to communicate diagnostic findings, repair needs, and vehicle conditions clearly.
  • Mentor developing automotive technicians and contribute to the shop's technical knowledge and diagnostic capabilities.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of professional automotive repair experience performing A-Level diagnostic and repair work.
  • Advanced experience diagnosing electrical systems, CAN bus/network communication faults, and complex drivability concerns.
  • Strong understanding of automotive electrical testing, wiring diagrams, factory-level diagnostic procedures, and scan tool operation.
  • Ability to independently diagnose and repair vehicles across multiple makes and models.
  • Own professional automotive diagnostic tools.
  • ASE Master Technician certification or ASE L1 Advanced Engine Performance Specialist certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce quality repairs efficiently, verify completed work, communicate effectively with service advisors, and support less-experienced technicians.

Additional requirements: Some positions may require a valid driver’s license, motor vehicle record review, background screening, drug or alcohol screening, or other job-related pre-employment requirements based on the duties of the position, the client’s lawful requirements, and applicable law.
