A Day in the Life: Policy Analyst in a Nonprofit Advocacy Group (Energy)

About the Role

This role is for a Policy Analyst within a nonprofit advocacy group focused on energy policy. The work involves monitoring legislative and corporate developments, conducting research, and communicating the organization's stance to various stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Conduct daily reviews of news wires to track developments in the energy world, including corporate merger rumors, congressional legislation proposals, accounting scandals, and foreign government announcements regarding infrastructure or environmental policy.
• Handle media and legislative inquiries, such as providing detailed information about press releases to Congressional staff.
• Proactively contact and maintain relationships with a wide network of local activist groups, congressional staff, and reporters to disseminate the organization's message.
• Represent the organization alongside the policy director at meetings with funding foundations to discuss current initiatives.
• Lead or contribute to in-depth studies and campaigns, such as those concerning municipal waste incineration emission standards.
• Conduct background research and author reports on complex topics, such as nuclear waste disposal alternatives.

Qualifications & Skills

• Ability to synthesize complex legislative and policy information.
• Strong research skills, including the ability to work through extensive reading lists of annual reports, magazine articles, and academic studies.
• Excellent communication and networking abilities for engaging with activists, journalists, and government officials.
• Capability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, balancing urgent press-related tasks with long-term research projects.
• A passion for energy and environmental policy issues.
