About the role
The M1 Abrams Tank System Maintainer in the Army National Guard is responsible for supervising and performing maintenance on M1 Abrams Tanks. This position requires a highly skilled individual who can diagnose and troubleshoot malfunctions, perform maintenance on various systems, and operate vehicular mounted armament.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose and troubleshoot malfunctions in the tank's suspension systems, steering systems, hydraulic systems, auxiliary power units, fire extinguisher/suppression systems, and gas particulate systems.
- Perform on-board direct support tasks on the tank's vehicular mounted armament, gun turret drive system, and fire control system.
Requirements
- Must be at least a junior in high school, or have a high school diploma or GED certificate.
- Must be between the ages of 17 and 35.
- Must be able to pass a physical exam and meet legal and moral standards.
- Military enlistment in the Army National Guard.
- Must meet citizenship requirements (see NATIONALGUARD.com for details).
Qualifications
Helpful skills include strong attention to detail and interest in working with diesel and turbine engines. Training will prepare you for civilian careers as an electronics mechanic, avionics technician, or missile facilities repairer.
Skills
Develops skills in electronic and mechanical principles and concepts, use of electronic, electrical, and mechanical test equipment, use of schematics, drawings, and wiring diagrams.

Schedule
Basic Training: 10 weeks
Advanced Individual Training: 24 weeks
Pay
Pay varies based on experience and MOS availability. Candidates may earn between $200 and $250 per drill weekend, subject to change.
