About the role

Under direction of the Chief of Police or designee, supervises and is responsible for the work of subordinate law enforcement officers, security officers, and other civilian staff. Assists in the overall administration of an institution security program, and performs related duties as required.

Responsibilities

  • Explaining and enforcing city and state laws and ordinances and coordinating, explaining and interpreting institution security measures, rules, regulations, policies and procedures;
  • Making regular contacts with subordinate officers, other institution personnel, the San Francisco Police Department and others to obtain or furnish information concerning security regulations and violations thereof;
  • Preparing or supervising the preparation of daily and special reports of security activities;
  • Overseeing and/or assisting with several key programs and initiatives, including the management of the parking enforcement program, CLERY reporting requirements, and the department's Training Program in compliance with POST;
  • Managing the in-house training program and chairs hiring committees for all police department positions;
  • Participating in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. (e.g. crime prevention training, weaponless defense, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions;
  • Patrolling college facilities (e.g. grounds, roads, buildings, adjacent areas, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of providing visibility, maintaining security, and deterring criminal activities;
  • Performing inspections for the purpose of ensuring accurate processes and operations;
  • Communicating with students, staff, and visitors (e.g. safety and security policies, enforcement procedures, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring understanding of information and potential consequences of violation;
  • Enforcing college policies as necessary (e.g. student ticketing, disciplinary issues, etc.) for the purpose of implementing campus Police Department processes and student code of conduct;
  • Escorting students assigned personnel and/or visitors for the purpose of providing direction, ensuring safety, and providing site security;
  • Initiating necessary disciplinary action for the purpose of ensuring effective Police Department operations;
  • Investigating potential campus crimes and/or student related community incidents for the purpose of resolving conflicts, taking appropriate action, and/or referring to outside agency for resolution;
  • Monitoring campus activity and student behavior during regular and special events (e.g. dances, sports activities, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring student compliance with established guidelines, regulatory requirements, and maintaining a safe and positive learning environment, and secure facility;
  • Overseeing department activities and day-to-day operations (e.g. reviews and edits officer reports, vehicle maintenance, day watch officers, daily line ups, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring department activities are completed in accordance with established policies, laws and regulations;
  • Reporting safety issues or concerns to the maintenance department (e.g. broken fixtures, insufficient lighting, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe environment which is free of hazards;
  • Responding to inquiries from a variety of sources regarding campus security issues (e.g. permitted parking, complaints, etc.) for the purpose of providing information, direction, and solutions;
  • Responding to a variety of situations (e.g. accidents, injuries, vandalism, suspicious activities, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and security concerns;
  • Scheduling work hours and assignments for the purpose of ensuring adequate staffing for regular operations and special events;
  • Testifying in court proceedings (e.g. traffic citations, vehicle accidents, burglaries, etc.) for the purpose of providing information regarding alleged illegal activity.

Requirements

Three (3) years of experience as a police officer, member of a military police unit or other work involving the safeguarding of life and property.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination);
  • California POST Intermediate Certificate;
  • California POST Supervisory Certificate;
  • Three (3) years experience as a Sworn Police Officer.

Benefits

Additional Days Off with Pay. As stipulated in the appropriate bargaining agreements and board resolutions, Classified employees working full-year (260 days/year) work schedules are granted, as paid days off, the days between Christmas Day and New Year's Day, as well as an additional five (5) paid days off during spring break. Eligible school-term-only (STO) employees who are not scheduled to work the designated days between Christmas and New Year's Day shall be granted three (3) paid days off to be scheduled by mutual agreement between the employee and supervisor. Eligible school- term-only (STO) employees who are not scheduled to work the days designated as Spring Break will not be paid for these days off.

Pay

Step 1 - Step 5: $53.6923 - $65.2633/hourly; $111,680 - $135,748/annually

Schedule

This is not a remote work position and requires office/on-site presence.
