6th Grade Math Teacher

About the Role

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, this position develops students' skills and competence in basic and complex mathematical principles, equations, formulas, and calculations, as well as an understanding of the application of mathematics in solving practical problems.

Responsibilities

• Develops and administers mathematics curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
• Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
• Develops lesson plans and instructional materials for subject area, translating lesson plans into learning experiences to challenge students and best utilize available time for instruction.
• Teaches knowledge and skills in mathematics, including concepts such as real and imaginary numbers, formulas, calculations, and geometry, and promotes creative thinking and analysis.
• Designs learning activities to demonstrate the application of mathematics to everyday existence and problem-solving.
• Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, modifying instructional methods to fit individual student needs, including those with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
• Maintains familiarity with district and Connecticut State standardized tests to adapt curriculum and maximize student achievement.
• Continues to acquire professional knowledge and stay current with developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops, or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
• Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting of student activities, achievement, and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
• Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
• Ensures student conduct conforms to school standards and district policies, maintaining standards of behavior needed for a functional learning atmosphere.
• Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
• Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids, and other supplies and equipment, maintaining inventory records.
• Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and central office administrators.

Skills & Qualifications

• Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
• Knowledge of a wide range of mathematical subject areas, including arithmetic equations, calculus, trigonometry, geometry, and related areas.
• Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans.
• Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
• Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
• Ability to organize and coordinate work effectively.
• Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
• Ability to engage in self-evaluation regarding performance and professional growth.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.

Requirements

• Connecticut State Certification as a Mathematics Education Teacher (#029 or #229).
• Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or ability to provide own transportation.
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
• Master’s Degree preferred.
• Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.

• Works in standard office and school building environments.
