About the role

A Medical Laboratory Specialist in the Army National Guard performs clinical tests on blood and other bodily fluids to diagnose, treat, and prevent illnesses. This role involves examining samples, testing for pathogens, and analyzing specimens.

Responsibilities

  • Perform elementary blood banking and clinical laboratory procedures in various fields such as hematology, immunohematology, clinical chemistry, serology, bacteriology, parasitology, and urinalysis.
  • Collect blood specimens through venipuncture and capillary puncture.
  • Pack, unpack, inspect, store, and distribute blood products.
  • Assemble, disassemble, and maintain laboratory equipment.

Requirements

  • Must be between the ages of 17 and 35.
  • Must be able to pass a physical exam and meet legal and moral standards.
  • Military enlistment in the Army National Guard is required.
  • Must be at least a junior in high school or have a high school diploma/GED.
  • Military enlistment is necessary.

Qualifications

To qualify for certification, specific educational criteria must be met after completing training. Certifications available include medical laboratory technician, cytotechnologist, and clinical laboratory technician.

Schedule

Training consists of 10 weeks of Basic Training and 52 weeks of Advanced Individual Training. Training includes both classroom and field work.

Pay

Non-prior service candidates will earn between $200 and $250 per drill weekend, subject to change.
