About The Position
THIS RECRUITMENT IS A CLOSED PROMOTIONAL AND IS RESTRICTED TO REGULAR EMPLOYEES OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY POLICE DEPARTMENT ONLY.
Examples Of Essential Functions
- Organizes, directs, evaluates and assigns activities of subordinate personnel.
- Provides direct and functional supervision of police officers, service officers, cadets, student workers, and civilian support personnel.
- Evaluates subordinate personnel.
- Conducts administrative investigations and administers discipline as required.
- Responds to reported criminal incidents, gathers and analyzes known facts, directs deployment of police personnel, identifies and detains/apprehends suspects and other involved parties.
- Writes reports and uses personal computer to produce final report document.
- Reads, classifies and assigns cases.
- Follows up on case investigations to assure timely completion for court proceedings.
- Participates in or directs police personnel in conflict intervention, restoration of order and protection of life and property.
- Reviews issued citations and reports.
Qualifications
- A typical combination is as follows: Possession of Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Intermediate Certificate.
- Five (5) years of full-time experience as a municipal Peace Officer, three (3) years of which must be with the Downey Police Department, at Step E at time of application deadline.
- MUST MEET TWO (2) OF THE FIVE (5) FOLLOWING DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associates degree or equivalent college credit (60 semester or 90 quarter units).
- Current assignment in the rank of Corporal.
- Current and/or prior assignment as a Field Training Officer (FTO).
- Current and/or prior specialized assignment, refer to Police Manual for qualifying assignments.
- Have current or prior participation in collateral duties, refer to Police Manual for qualifying duties.
- Licenses Requirements: Due to the performance of field duties that requires operation of a motor vehicle, a valid California Drivers License and an acceptable driving record is required.
Knowledge
- Principles and practices of supervision, training, and performance evaluations;
- Related Federal, State, and local laws, codes, ordinances and regulations;
- Rules and regulations of the Police Department;
- Modern police methods and procedures;
- Community Oriented Policing philosophy, practices and procedures.
Ability
- Assign, instruct and review the work of subordinates;
- Cookordination effective efforts that may be required by differing situations;
- Supervise, train, and evaluate staff;
- Interpret and apply related Federal, State, and local laws, codes, ordinances and regulations, as well as Departmental rules and regulations;
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
- Proficiently utilize personal computer software such as Word to produce reports;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
