3rd Shift Nurse Manager

Location: Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute, Danville, VA – a 72‑bed Joint Commission accredited state mental health facility.

Job Duties

Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse Manager to lead a team of RNs, LPNs, and Psychiatric Care Technicians (PCTs) in providing nursing care to adult psychiatric patients (ages 18‑64) in a safe and therapeutic environment. The 3rd‑shift RN Manager works closely with a multidisciplinary treatment team to deliver collaborative, trauma‑informed psychiatric care, prioritize care according to patient acuity, and manage changes in patient behavior or physical condition.

Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise a team of RNs, LPNs, and PCTs on the 3rd shift.
• Provide direct nursing care to adult psychiatric patients.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to develop and implement treatment plans.
• Prioritize patient care based on acuity and adjust staffing as needed.
• Monitor and respond to changes in patient behavior and physical condition.
• Oversee patient care operations to ensure the highest level of care.
• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care from admission through discharge.
• Offer supervision, mentorship, and support to nursing staff and PCTs.

Minimum Qualifications

• Current, good‑standing Registered Nurse license in Virginia (or license‑eligible); multi‑state compact endorsement accepted.
• Graduation from an accredited RN program.
• Experience in psychiatric nursing.
• Prior supervisory experience.
• Valid driver’s license, maintained in good standing.
• Clinical problem‑solving and patient‑management skills; ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team.
• Leadership, verbal and written communication, mentoring, and teaching abilities.
• Excellent organizational skills with multitasking capability in a fast‑paced environment.
• Computer proficiency and experience with electronic health records.
• Knowledge of psychosocial rehabilitation/recovery models and SVMHI admissions process.

Additional Considerations

• Experience as a Registered Nurse and/or Nurse Supervisor in psychiatric, acute care, long‑term, or correctional settings.
• Veterans and individuals with National Service experience are encouraged to apply.

Pay

• Hiring range: $111,586 – $153,988 (Pay Band 5).
• Shift differentials:
  • 1st shift weekend: $5.50 per hour
  • 2nd shift weekday: $5.50 per hour
  • 2nd shift weekend/holidays: $6.00 per hour
  • 3rd shift weekday: $4.00 per hour
  • 3rd shift weekend/holidays: $7.00 per hour

Schedule

This is a third‑shift position (11:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.). The role requires flexibility, including rotating weekends and holidays with other nurse managers as assigned by the Chief Nursing Officer.
