About the Role

The Teacher fulfills the mission of the Catholic school by guiding, inspiring, and educating students in a loving, Christ-centered environment. The Teacher is immediately responsible to the principal for carrying out the policies of the school and the Archdiocese of San Antonio as they relate to the classroom and contact with students and parents.

Responsibilities

  • Supports and upholds the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission of the school.
  • Acts as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Supports and adheres to the policies and procedures of the school and Archdiocese of San Antonio, including the Religious Standards for Catholic School Employees.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding school matters.
  • Adheres to safety training and protocols to ensure the safety and well-being of self and others.
  • Protects the confidentiality of client information, services rendered, donor details, investigations, and financial information.
  • Adheres to the Code of Conduct and the Faith and Moral Policy.
  • Takes a solution-oriented approach in interactions and promotes collaboration and commitment to the organization’s Mission and Vision.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Instructional Strategies

  • Develops and implements lesson plans that fulfill the school’s curriculum program with written evidence of preparation.
  • Prepares lessons that accommodate differences in student learning styles.
  • Presents subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, Department of Catholic Schools, and administrative regulations.
  • Uses appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment based on student learning styles and needs.
  • Conducts assessments of student learning styles and uses results to plan instructional activities.
  • Works with staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods per DCS requirements.
  • Plans and supervises assignments of teacher aides and volunteers.
  • Uses technology to strengthen the teaching and learning process.

Student Growth and Development

  • Helps students analyze and improve study methods and habits.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Assumes responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned, including sponsoring outside activities approved by the principal.
  • Serves as a positive role model for students and supports the mission of Catholic education.

Classroom Management and Organization

  • Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for students’ physical, social, and emotional development.
  • Manages student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Takes necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.

Communication

  • Establishes and maintains open communication through conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  • Maintains a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Uses effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Participates in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Keeps informed of and complies with Department of Catholic Schools regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  • Compiles, maintains, and files all required reports, records, and documents.
  • Attends and participates in faculty meetings and serves on staff committees as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 12 credit hours in education courses or a valid, appropriate state certificate as outlined in the Texas Catholic Conference Education Department standards.
  • Technology proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, databases, internet use for educational purposes, and multimedia presentations.
  • Demonstrated competency in the assigned subject area(s).
  • Must pass archdiocesan Safe Environment Requirements and background screening.
  • Must pass Texas DPS Fingerprint-based Applicant Clearinghouse screening.
  • Knowledge of the assigned subject and general knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, self-motivated, and able to work independently and on a team.
  • Good written and verbal skills.
  • May be required to work some weekends and nights.
  • Required to work a minimum full school day.
  • Good critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
