About the role
Eugenio María de Hostos Charter School is a K-12 institution serving over 900 students. The school offers a dual language program in grades K-2 and a Spanish Language Arts program for grades 3-12. Staff, students, and parents collaborate to foster a learning environment. The mission is to provide a safe and nurturing space where students earn the Seal of Biliteracy (English and Spanish), develop advocacy for social justice, and prepare for global engagement.
Essential Functions
- Develops and administers school core curriculum.
- Promotes a classroom environment conducive to individualized and small group instruction and student learning, and adapts teaching methods to meet students’ varying needs.
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
- Encourages parental involvement in students’ education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
- Communicates the level of student achievement and progress toward established classroom, school and state standards to parents.
- Sets and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Collaborates with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, to evaluate and access curriculum.
- Participates in professional development opportunities, staff meetings, committees and school-wide events.
- Supervises students in activities that take place out of the classroom during the school day.
- Prepares and maintains accurate and complete records as required by law and school policy.
- Fulfills State Education Department Regulations.
Qualifications
- Masters Degree Preferred
- Successful prior teaching experience preferred
- New York State Teacher Certification or in progress
- Spanish proficiency, but only required for bilingual positions
- Working knowledge of word processing, internet applications, and computer literacy
