About the Project
Renovation of a one-story commercial building into an architect’s office and studio, preserving subtle nods to its 1950s heritage while integrating into the emerging arts district. The transformation began with the removal of the roof and interior walls.
Within the existing exterior walls and foundation, a new steel frame supports a higher roof and creates an open plan. Large wall openings were cut to introduce natural light, entry doors, and views. Insulation and a new skin of slate and standing-seam metal layered over the original masonry improved watertightness and insulation while retaining existing materials.
The configuration of light monitors shields interior spaces from direct sun while providing dynamic, indirect light and color that shifts with the time of day, season, and weather.
Duvall Decker, acting through its development entity Eldon Development, led the project’s development, financing, and architectural design. Collaborators included Structural Engineering Associates, LLC; Atherton Consulting Engineers; Andy Covington Engineering, LLC; and Construction Cost Analysis.
