About the Role

The Educational Assistant - Instructional supports teachers in a classroom setting by supervising and assisting students individually and in small groups, preparing educational materials, maintaining classroom supplies, and collaborating as a team member to help students as assigned. This is a grant-funded position with no guarantee of continued employment.

Work Year: 153 days – 6 hours per day

Responsibilities

  • Assist teachers in classroom and resource spaces by supervising and supporting students individually and in small groups with literacy, math, and other activities.
  • Support large group activities such as drill work, reading aloud, and storytelling.
  • Assist students with classroom technology, including computers and audio-visual equipment, as directed by the teacher.
  • Follow daily instruction plans for individual and small group learning as outlined by school team members.
  • Engage in oral communication with students, including reading aloud and listening to students read.
  • Ensure the safety of individual students and groups, including during recess and lunch.
  • Assist with record-keeping, copying, filing, grading assignments, and taking attendance.
  • Prepare educational materials (e.g., copying, typing, laminating) and maintain classroom supplies.
  • Participate in team meetings, demonstrating appropriate social skills, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.
  • Interact professionally with students, staff, and parents, resolving conflicts courteously.
  • Guide independent study, enrichment, and remedial work assigned by the teacher.
  • Administer, score, and record achievement and diagnostic tests as recommended by the teacher.
  • Check notebooks, correct papers, and supervise testing and make-up work as assigned.
  • Attend in-services, workshops, and training programs as requested by the supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or classroom teacher.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Highly Qualified status under ESSA, or one of the following:
    • Pass Work Keys or Praxis test,
    • 48 Semester Hours of College Coursework, or
    • Associate’s Degree.
  • Must pass a fingerprint-based criminal background check and be cleared by the Office of Human Resources.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.

Preferred:

  • Completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education.
  • Experience with the District’s Gateway Circulation System.
  • Experience working with the Reading Renaissance (AR) program.
  • Spanish-speaking skills.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Competence in mathematics, reading, writing, and speaking.
  • Ability to learn and apply behavioral management techniques with consistency and good judgment.
  • Ability to prioritize, plan, organize, and execute work using independent judgment.
  • Knowledge of District and school policies and procedures.
  • Basic computer skills, including word processing.
  • Excellent work attitude, with a willingness to take responsibility for project completion and initiative.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with staff, students, and parents.
  • Ability to make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
