About the role
The Prince George’s County Youth@Work Internship Program offers professional and energetic interns experiential, industry-based work opportunities in entry-level roles. The program exposes interns aged 18–24 to various careers within the Prince George’s County Government, helping them develop skills to fill current and future vacant positions. These are full-time and part-time temporary positions.
The Youth@Work Internship Program is funded through a U.S. Department of Labor - Employment and Training Administration grant award of $3,000,000 (100%).
Disciplines and Examples of Work

Budget Management and Finance
- For interns interested in budget, finance, accounting, economics, or business/public management.
- Requires excellent written and oral communication, math, and analytical skills, including experience with advanced Excel spreadsheets and formulas.
- Interns will work on budgets, Capital Improvement Program budgets, review risk assessments, and represent the County at leadership meetings.
- Education and experience gained: budget, finance, accounting, quantitative analysis, economics, or business/public management.

Community and Customer Relations
- For interns with excellent written and oral communication skills, strong listening skills, and experience in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Interns connect residents with government resources, represent the County at community events, and assist residents with diverse backgrounds and concerns.
- Education and experience gained: communications, marketing, or public relations.

Environmental Services
- Interns address pollution, environmental land use, and solid waste management issues.
- Tasks include analyzing data, preparing background materials for planning/program development, and participating in public outreach to educate stakeholders.
- Education and experience gained: urban and regional planning, urban design, civil engineering, economics, business or public administration, environmental science, or political science.

Government Operations
- For interns interested in Human Resources Management, Procurement and Contracting, and Public Policy and Legislative Support.
- Requires excellent written and oral communication, strong listening, and decision-making skills.
- Education and experience gained: human resources, psychology, organizational development, procurement, marketing, economics, retailing, public policy, business or public administration.

Health and Human Services
- Interns provide primary prevention to reduce communicable diseases, assist in clinics, investigate infectious disease cases, implement nutrition education, and support clinicians.
- Requires strong written and oral communication, listening, and decision-making skills.
- Education and experience gained: biology, counseling, physical or social science, nursing, social work, social service, sociology, or psychology.

Infrastructure and Development
- Interns address economic or transportation issues, analyze population and land use data, develop project reports, review plans for regulatory compliance, and participate in public outreach.
- Education and experience gained: urban and regional planning, civil engineering, economics, business or public administration.

Information Technology
- Interns compile project status reports, ensure IT activities comply with policies, and present IT business solutions.
- Preferred certifications: CISM, CRISC, CCNA, CCT, CSM, CompTIA A+, Microsoft 365 Fundamentals.
- Requires knowledge of computer systems, troubleshooting, and web development experience.
- Education and experience gained: IT, business, or public administration.

Public Safety
- Interns gain experience in public safety, including correctional facilities, emergency call operations, and support for special events.
- Requires a strong desire to work in public safety, knowledge of County geography, ability to follow complex instructions, and pass pre-employment exams and background checks.
- Must possess a driver’s license.
- Education and experience gained: criminal justice, law enforcement, emergency management, corrections, homeland security, or legal studies.
Requirements
- Be a resident of Prince George’s County, Maryland.
- Be between the ages of 18–24 by October 1, 2026.
- Have a 2.5 or higher-grade point average.
- Submit a short summary in the application explaining your reason for desiring to participate in this internship.
- Be a former Prince George’s County Summer Youth Enrichment Program (SYEP) participant.
- Conduct an interview with an Agency representative if progressed to the next level.
Organization Specific Requirements
- Completion of a skills and/or behavioral assessment.
- Passing a pre-employment background process (paid by the requesting agency).
Eligibility to Work
