Position Purpose

School counselors serve as leaders, advocates, and collaborators working to recognize and remove systemic barriers to student success, increase student achievement, improve graduation rates, increase student attendance, reduce disciplinary referrals, complete individual learning plans, and increase student participation in the community.

The major function of the school counselor is to incorporate the elements of a comprehensive school counseling program per the Wisconsin Comprehensive School Counseling Model and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model. Prevention and intervention are integral to a school counselor’s role as they define, manage, deliver, and assess a comprehensive program that incorporates leadership, advocacy, collaboration, and systemic change, preparing students to be college, career, and community ready.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Demonstrate the skills required to work effectively with school teams to promote a safe and healthy school climate, including prevention and intervention strategies addressing issues including social/emotional competence, conflict resolution, peer mediation, bullying prevention, and crisis management.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the role that diversity, inclusion, gender, and equity have on students’ academic, career, and social/emotional development.
• Demonstrate classroom instruction skills and individual/small group counseling skills to facilitate students’ social/emotional, academic, and career development throughout their school experience.
• Demonstrate an understanding of relevant state and federal laws, institutional rules, regulations, and standards along with the national and ethical standards of the American School Counselor Association. Demonstrate the ability to utilize student data, assessments, and research from the field to improve school counseling programs and improve the learning environment for all students.
• Demonstrate an understanding of essential aspects of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program and the skills and ability to develop, manage, deliver, and assess the key components.
• Facilitate and implement developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented individual and group activities to meet the needs of all learners and ensure equitable access, support, programming, and services to foster educational success.
• Guide and support all students, individually or in groups, with developing personal/social skills, goals and plans.
• Collaborate annually with parents/guardians and educators to assist students in developing rigorous academic course plans, understanding of and access to college preparatory curriculum, available post-secondary credit/dual credit course offerings, career exploration and interests, and guidance in pursuit of post-secondary opportunities.
• Collaborate effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators and other educational/community resources to accurately and appropriately assess students to determine a structure and provide individual and group counseling services at the universal level for all students, and at tiered/targeted levels for students with identified concerns and needs.
