Position Summary

The Para Educator/Math Teacher will raise Math levels and prepare students to pass the Math portion of the ParaPro test. They will teach a class of approximately 20-25 adult students, focusing on explicit Math strategies. The Math Teacher collaborates with the Reading/Writing Teacher to plan and implement the curriculum, ensuring successful student outcomes.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Prepare lesson plans and choose appropriate materials, following ABE Department’s Curriculum Guidelines and MA DESE College and Career Readiness Standards, and submit one lesson plan per month.
  • Meet weekly with the Reading/Writing Teacher to plan, implement, and monitor the Para Educator curriculum and provide individualized support to students in the program.
  • Attend and participate in monthly staff meetings, department meetings, and appropriate in-service workshops.
  • Evaluate student progress and make placement recommendations as required by department policy/procedures.
  • Collect and submit attendance records, document student progress, and assist with other DESE-related activities.
  • Collaborate closely with the Director and Program Administrator to ensure program goals are met.
  • Work effectively with other teachers, counselors, the program administrator, and Director on student and program issues.
  • Follow department policy/procedures regarding substitutes and substitute lesson plans.
  • Integrate digital literacy into instruction, including using Aztec software for additional practice.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Abilities & Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree; Masters in Math or Adult Basic Education preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years ABE classroom teaching experience – at least one complete year teaching adult immigrants.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of learner-centered teaching approaches and effective integrated skills activities.
  • Massachusetts Teacher Certification a plus.
  • MAPT certification is preferred but not required for this position.

Physical Requirements

  • Mobility: Frequent walking, standing.
  • Lifting/Strength: Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry objects ranging from 10 to 20 lbs (e.g., books, supplies, equipment).
  • Physical Dexterity: Bending, crouching, kneeling, stooping, and reaching to assist students.
  • Stationary Tasks: Remaining in a stationary position (sitting/standing) for long periods.

Terms of Employment

  • Employment Status: Part Time
  • August - June
  • Grant Funded position
  • Union Affiliation: SEU, Unit D
  • FLSA Classification: Non Exempt
  • Weekly Schedule: 3 mornings per week
  • Teaching Hours: 6
  • Preparation Hours: 1.5
  • Monthly meetings, third Thursday of the month, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.
  • Salary shall be commensurate with education and experience, in accordance with the Somerville Educator's Union collective bargaining agreement
