About the Role
This position reports to building administrators and involves performing the essential job functions of a Classroom Teacher with a focus on special education. The role requires expertise in IDEA-BPL categories, IEP development, and collaboration with regular education staff.
Responsibilities
- Perform applicable job functions of a Classroom Teacher.
- Initiate and participate in categorical eligibility meetings as an expert in a category of IDEA-BPL.
- Ensure each child has a current IEP (Individual Education Plan) with required signatures.
- Monitor the implementation of IEPs and review/write them on an annual basis.
- Create and maintain a working special education file in a locked cabinet containing:
- Teacher assessments covering pre- and post-evaluation of students' progress.
- Current IEPs with required signatures.
- Most recent psychological evaluations.
- Pertinent medical information.
- Provide the building principal with advice on special education issues.
- Conduct in-service sessions for staff as required by district policies and state/federal regulations.
- Collaborate, consult, schedule, and instruct regular education staff regarding classroom inclusion, intervention, and modification techniques.
- Address the physical, social, and educational needs of students.
- Inform appropriate staff of necessary medical and other information.
- Collaborate and consult with regular education staff regarding classroom expectations and dynamics.
- Assist students with taking prescribed medication(s).
- Lift and/or move non-ambulatory students.
- Assist with diapering and toileting students aged three to adult.
- Adapt foods and assist in feeding students.
- Present a professional appearance appropriate to the teaching assignment.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of multicultural issues.
- Perform teaching and reporting requirements for state and federally funded programs.
- Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
Requirements
- Current Oklahoma Certificate as a Special Education Teacher.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education or meets state requirements.
Knowledge
- English Language: Knowledge of structure, content, grammar, spelling, and composition.
- Mathematics: Knowledge of arithmetic, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percentages.
- Customer and Personal Services: Knowledge of principles for providing customer and personal services, including needs assessment and quality standards.
Skills
- Communication Skills: Ability to exchange information, give/receive instructions, respond to inquiries, and prepare correspondence. Must write legibly and demonstrate excellent grammatical structure, spelling, and vocabulary.
- Performance Measures: Ability to perform skilled, professional tasks under limited supervision, including developing lesson plans, teaching, evaluating student progress, assigning grades, and meeting curriculum objectives.

Schedule
- Contract Length: 182 days (returning teachers) or 182 days + Induction Week (new teachers).
- Work Schedule: 30 minutes before and after school, including special events outside the regular workday.
