Our Refining operations are comprised of global refining, marketing, and transportation of petroleum products and related specialty businesses. Through its refining business segment, Phillips 66 upgrades crude oil and other feedstocks into higher-value petroleum products including clean-burning gasoline, ultra-low-sulfur diesel, jet fuel, lubricants, petroleum coke, and other specialty products while maintaining a high regard for safety and environmental limitations.

About the role

As a 2027 University Intern – Refining Engineer, you will gain hands-on experience through meaningful projects that help build your technical and professional skills. This summer internship offers:

  • Orientation, training events, field trips, social activities, weekly seminars, and opportunities to meet and interact with functional business leaders and executives.
  • Continuous coaching conversations with your manager, who will provide direction throughout your internship.
  • An assigned mentor for further guidance, technical challenges, and navigating day-to-day corporate questions.
  • A presentation at the end of the summer to senior business leaders and key stakeholders, demonstrating what you learned during your internship.

Potential internship locations include: Linden, NJ; Lake Charles, LA; Roxana, IL; Ferndale, WA; Rodeo, CA; Borger, TX; Ponca City, OK; Sweeny, TX.

Responsibilities

An Engineering summer internship with Phillips 66 Refining will allow you to contribute to projects supporting our Refining organizations:

  • Projects chosen to provide a clear view of what an engineering professional does within Phillips 66, focusing on areas such as:
    • Optimization of an existing process
    • Improving energy efficiency
    • Handling key logistics
    • Improving equipment reliability
    • Monitoring emissions or completing permit applications
    • Optimizing equipment use by finding and eliminating defects
    • Using sophisticated modeling and data analysis software tools
  • Each project will address an area of importance to the business.
  • Work side-by-side with experienced engineers and network with other interns.
  • Introduction to company practices, procedures, technical tools, technical training classes, participation in technical networks, and on-the-job training.

Requirements

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country.
  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science/Corrosion, Metallurgical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or equivalent field of study.
  • Greater than 30 hours of earned college credit.
  • Graduation date of August 2027 or later.
  • Available for a minimum of eleven continuous weeks.
  • Able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to maintain a clean-shaven face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly.
  • Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).

Qualifications

Preferred:

  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Previous internship with Phillips 66.
  • Previous internship or co-op participant in a related industry.
  • Willing to work in any of our operating locations.
  • Valid driver's license.

Pay

This position has a pay range of $2,564 - $3,418 bi-weekly, dependent on a candidate's degree type and expected graduation date.
