2027 Frances E. Malamy Research Fellowship

The Frances E. Malamy Research Fellowship is awarded annually to one recipient to perform independent scholarly research centered in the Phillips Library’s archives and manuscripts collections. The fellowship honors Frances E. Malamy, a long-standing member of the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) family who dedicated her efforts to processing manuscripts and believed in the library’s value to the academic community and public.

About the Fellowship

The recipient receives a $5,500 award, payable in two equal installments at the midpoint and conclusion of their residency. The fellowship must be completed within the calendar year following acceptance and requires in-library research for a minimum of eight weeks, not divided into more than two terms. The program culminates in a research summary, typically a public lecture or discussion, submitted for the benefit of the library’s audiences. PEM reserves the right to publicize the resulting product to promote research within the collection.

Eligibility

• Research must be centered in the Phillips Library’s archives and manuscripts collections.
• Applicants must submit a research proposal (1,500 words max) outlining the project, specific collections to be used, and the desired end product.
• Fellowship requires a minimum of eight weeks of in-library research, not divided into more than two terms.
• Open to U.S. citizens, green card holders, and holders of an F1 student visa or J1 practicum/training visa.
