The Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) supports the effective and timely development and operation of national security systems through scientific research and the application of advanced technologies. PSL has more than 150 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation. The Electric Propulsion & Plasma Science section focuses on experimentally studying electric propulsion and other low-temperature plasma space technologies, including resolving flight anomalies and characterizing commercial EP devices using extensive plasma physics expertise. With a range of test facilities, including the world-class EP3 chamber, the section studies low-power devices like electrosprays and high-power (>10 kW) systems, as well as plasma-adjacent phenomena such as electrostatic discharge (ESD), sputtering, multipactor breakdown, and plasma-material interaction.

About the role

The selected candidate will work full-time, on-site at our facility in El Segundo, California, supporting scientists and engineers in the Electric Propulsion & Plasma Science section. Responsibilities include technical assessment, research and development, risk mitigation, and anomaly investigation through laboratory experimentation and analysis. The role demands hands-on skills for designing, fabricating, instrumenting, and troubleshooting experiments, as well as maintaining existing test infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Support scientists and engineers in laboratory experimentation and analysis for electric propulsion and plasma science.
  • Design, fabricate, instrument, and troubleshoot new experiments.
  • Maintain and ensure readiness of electric propulsion and plasma science test infrastructure.
  • Interface with internal support organizations as needed.
  • Perform maintenance on existing experiments and test facilities.
  • Adapt to changing organizational needs and evolving project requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited program in aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or a related discipline (conferred or pursuing within the last 12 months).
  • 0-1 year of industry experience.
  • Fabrication skills with hand tools and basic machine tools.
  • Working knowledge of electronics and basic circuit design.
  • Working knowledge of data acquisition systems, including measurement hardware, sensors, wiring, and data acquisition software.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance (U.S. citizenship required).

Pay

The grade-based pay range for this role is $84,600.00 - $126,900.00 annually, with individual salaries determined by factors such as education, experience, knowledge, and skills.
