About the role

The Instructional Assistant/SPED position supports the instructional program with specific responsibilities for assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students in various settings.

Responsibilities

  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher.
  • Administers tests, homework, make-up work, etc., supporting teachers in the classroom.
  • Assists medically fragile, physically disabled, or developmentally delayed students, including tasks like lifting, feeding, toileting, and medication administration.
  • Attends meetings and in-service presentations to acquire and convey information relevant to job functions.
  • Communicates with supervising instructional staff, professional support personnel, and parents to assist in evaluating progress and implementing IEP objectives.
  • Escorts students to ensure their safe arrival and departure from various locations.
  • Implements behavioral plans designed by the IEP team, utilizing appropriate physical and/or therapeutic approaches to manage student behavior.
  • Maintains a safe and positive learning environment by monitoring students' daily schedules and behavior plans.
  • Monitors students during assigned periods in various school environments, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Performs general clerical functions such as copying, filing, and data entry.
  • Provides instruction to students in individual and group activities, reinforcing instructional objectives and implementing IEP plans.
  • Remains with students at all times to provide safety and remove students when necessary.
  • Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One of the following:
    • Sixty postsecondary hours of college coursework
    • AAS degree
    • Passing of ParaPro Assessment
    • ACT WorkKeys
    • The Master Teacher Para Educator Program
  • Valid Arizona DPS Level I IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Job-related experience is desired
  • CPR and First Aid certificates
  • QBS certificate maintained
