About the Role

The School Nurse is a registered, professional nurse who serves the school community to oversee school health policies and programs. The School Nurse provides expertise and oversight for the provision of school health services and promotion of health education. Using professional knowledge and judgment, the School Nurse delivers health care to students, performs health screenings, and coordinates referrals to healthcare providers. The role serves as a liaison between school personnel, family, community, and healthcare providers to advocate for student health care, wellness, and a healthy school environment.

Responsibilities

• Establishes and maintains a comprehensive school health program.
• Maintains information about the health and developmental status of students.
• Supports nursing care plans with specific goals and interventions tailored to student’s needs.
• Maintains nursing care that promotes, maintains, or restores health and prevents illness.
• Manages student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
• Documents nursing care via computer program and gathers statistics for district and state reports.
• Ensures compliance with Arizona State Immunization requirements for all students.
• Participates in the Medicaid in Public Schools (MIPS) program as defined by district policies.
• Conducts annual health screenings and referrals as mandated by district policies or the Arizona Department of Health Services.
• Collaborates with instructional staff, school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes.
• Counsels students and families to improve student performance, health status, and problem-solving techniques.
• Participates on the PCL team to improve school nursing practice.
• Assesses, plans, and implements school health services in collaboration with other school/district staff.
• Participates in meetings (e.g., staff, district, IEPs, 504’s) to gather or convey medical and health-related data.
• Prepares written materials (e.g., student injury reports, Arizona School Health Annual Report, immunization data report) to meet mandated requirements.
• Reports student/school health and safety status to administrators and appropriate agencies (e.g., suspected child abuse, substance abuse, or inappropriate behaviors).
• Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns or directs them to appropriate personnel/agencies.
• Responds to inquiries from teachers, parents, and administrators to provide information or direction.
• Participates in school activities (e.g., open house, parent-teacher conferences).
• Maintains current knowledge in the area of specialization and supports the goals and objectives of the school and district.

Requirements

• Minimum two years of recent experience in a public nursing, pediatric, or emergency room setting.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred (equivalency may be considered).
• Current professional nursing license.
• Current CPR certification.
• Arizona Nursing Certification or National School Nurse Certification to be acquired within three years of hire.
• Valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
• Criminal background clearance.

Skills

• Ability to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with periodic skill upgrades to meet changing job conditions or student health needs.
• Proficiency in applying nursing assessment tools and operating standard office equipment, including personal computers and software applications.
• Knowledge of age-appropriate application of the nursing process and epidemiological frameworks for pediatric influences in the school setting.
• Ability to assess common pediatric diseases/processes (e.g., chronic health conditions, birth defects).
• Familiarity with federal and state mandates relating to school health services and practices.
• Ability to work with diverse individuals/groups, establish constructive relationships, adapt to changing priorities, maintain confidentiality, and exhibit tact and patience.
• Proficiency in performing age-appropriate pediatric and adolescent physical/behavioral assessments.
• Ability to follow school nurse policies and practices as dictated by state and district guidelines.
• Application of appropriate nursing theory as a basis for decision-making in school nursing practice.

Work Environment

The role requires occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. The job is performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. Work is performed under limited supervision using the Scope and Standards of Practice for School Nursing.
