About the role

The Instructional Assistant/SPED position supports the instructional program at Shea Middle School, providing support to both regular and special education classrooms.

Responsibilities

  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher.
  • Administers tests, homework, make-up work, etc.
  • Assists medically fragile, physically disabled, or developmentally delayed students.
  • Attends meetings and in-service presentations.
  • Communicates with supervising instructional staff, professional support personnel, and parents.
  • Escorts students (e.g. bathroom, office classroom, etc.).
  • Implements behavioral plans designed by the IEP team.
  • Intervenes in potential conflicts.
  • Documents instructional materials and/or manual and electronic files/records.
  • Models appropriate social behavior.
  • Maintains students' daily schedule and behavior plan.
  • Maintains a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Performs general clerical functions.
  • Provides instruction to students in various activities.
  • Remains with students at all times.
  • Responds to emergency situations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One of the following:
    • Sixty postsecondary hours of college coursework;
    • AAS degree;
    • Passing of ParaPro Assessment.
  • ETS Parapro Assessment;
  • ACT WorkKeys;
  • The Master Teacher Para Educator.

Qualifications

  • Skills: Adhering to safety practices, operating standard office equipment, preparing and maintaining accurate records, understanding instructional procedures and practices, age-appropriate student activities, safety practices and procedures, conflict resolution, stages of child development/behavior.
  • Knowledge: Basic math, reading manuals, writing documents, presenting information, understanding instructional procedures and practices, age-appropriate student activities, safety practices and procedures, conflict resolution, stages of child development/behavior.
  • Abilities: Scheduling activities, gathering and/or collating data, using basic job-related equipment, scheduling activities, gathering and/or collating data, utilizing a variety of job-related equipment, identifying issues and creating action plans, interpreting data, utilizing equipment, adapting to changing work priorities, communicating with diverse groups, maintaining confidentiality, working as part of a team, working with constant interruptions, maintaining a positive rapport with students, employees and community.
