Location: Shadow Mountain High School – 12-month, non-interim position starting 8/17/2026.
About the role
The High School Groundskeeper supports the educational process by maintaining attractive, safe grounds and athletic fields, preventing erosion, and preparing areas for assemblies, events, and recreational activities. This position reports to the Site Administrator and/or Lead Groundskeeper.
Responsibilities
- Attend unit meetings, in-service training, and workshops to gather job-related information.
- Clean landscaped areas, storm drains, fields, and remove litter to prevent flooding and hazards.
- Consult with athletic and administrative personnel to plan, prioritize, and schedule grounds maintenance.
- Maintain and operate grounds keeping equipment (e.g., mowers, loaders, trucks, weed trimmers, blowers, chain saws) safely and efficiently.
- Plant and spread landscaping materials (e.g., plants, grass, bushes, trees, rocks, bark) to maintain attractive grounds and prevent erosion.
- Prepare and maintain grounds and athletic fields (e.g., fertilize soil, maintain courtyards, flower beds, chalk fields, paint stripping).
- Repair irrigation systems and components (e.g., valves, wiring, timers, switches) to ensure proper functionality.
- Request materials, supplies, equipment, or support personnel to complete assignments.
- Respond to safety and operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, vandalism, alarms) and take appropriate action or notify personnel.
- Transport tools, equipment, and supplies to ensure availability at job sites.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support the work unit’s efficiency and effectiveness.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Arizona DPS Level I IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card (www.azdps.gov/services/public/fingerprint).
- Driver’s License and evidence of insurability.
- Online Driver Training Certification.
- Job-related experience is desired but not required.
Skills
- Operate grounds maintenance equipment (e.g., tractors, mowers, weed whips, hand/power tools) while adhering to safety practices.
- Perform basic algebra and/or geometry; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and follow complex instructions.
- Knowledge of methods for preparing and maintaining plants, shrubs, lawns, and safety practices.
- Ability to schedule activities, collate data, and use job-related equipment.
- Flexibility to work with diverse groups, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively with students, staff, and the community.
- Problem-solving skills to identify issues and select action plans within prescribed guidelines.
Work Environment
- Physical demands include significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and fine finger dexterity.
- Typical work involves 10% sitting, 70% walking, and 20% standing.
- Exposure to temperature extremes and some risk of injury or illness.
Pay
$15.44 per hour, Grade 13, non-exempt (FLSA status).
Schedule
8 hours per day, 12-month position.
