Position Summary
Discovery Club is a Saint Paul Public Schools program offering out-of-school time child-care in a safe, fun, caring environment supporting children's learning and development. Child Care Workers are responsible for building relationships, actively engaging with, and supervising groups of up to 15 students.
Responsibilities
- Independently implement appropriate enrichment and recreational activities planned by Site Supervisors and Group Leaders for a group of up to 15 children.
- Jointly lead and manage larger groups in cooperation with other staff.
- Supervise youth activities, promote respect, explain social norms, and enforce District policies and rules of conduct.
- Guide and model social skills, personal responsibility, problem-solving, respect, and related skills.
- Participate with children in active indoor and outdoor recreational activities including swimming and walking.
- Adapt activities to meet the needs of youth.
- Carry out appropriate health and safety procedures.
- Provide appropriate behavior guidance and disciplinary action as needed.
- Follow child accountability and supervision of children procedures.
- Develop supportive relationships with Discovery Club participants and families.
- Document child incidents and accidents as needed.
- Understand, follow, and enforce program procedures (e.g., fire and tornado logs, accident and separation reports).
- Maintain the child care center and ensure it meets Department of Human Services standards; contact Site Supervisor when supplies and/or equipment is needed.
- Participate in staff development and complete the required number of training hours annually.
- Greet and welcome youth, families, and community into the program.
- Practice effective teamwork; work cooperatively and collaboratively with co-workers and school staff.
- Build community and establish a welcoming, engaging, respectful, cooperative environment.
- Report to work on time for each shift. Maintain an accurate time card and sign-in/out sheet.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Basic knowledge of health and safety procedures for young children.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to implement appropriate program experiences by carrying out provided activity plans.
- Ability to actively supervise and participate with children in all activities.
- Ability to be solely responsible for a group of up to 15 children.
- Ability to use positive methods of behavior guidance.
- Ability to make decisions with minimum assistance.
- Ability to ride a school bus to accompany children on field trips.
- Ability to walk two miles on uneven terrain, lift 20 pounds, and accompany children in the water on swimming field trips.
- Ability to work effectively with children and their parents/guardians who represent a wide range of social, economic, racial, and ethnic groups and levels of ability.
- Ability to be flexible and work cooperatively with co-workers and school staff.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
- Ability to work before or after school, on non-school days, and during the summer.
Minimum Qualifications
- Applicants must meet the State Department of Human Services requirements for Assistant Child Care.
- The minimum age requirement is 18.
- A High School Diploma or GED is required.
Preferred Qualification
- One year experience working with school-aged children preferred.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
This is a 12-month position at 10-20 hours per week. Starting pay is $18.00 per hour.
