About the role

The position involves working alongside the assistant coach to support the growth and development of student athletes. This includes teaching fundamental skills, fostering a culture of academic and athletic excellence, and promoting the sport within the school and community.

Responsibilities

  • Keep current with sport-specific literature and attend clinics/workshops.
  • Study and understand WIAA rules and regulations.
  • Promote the sport within the school and community.
  • Implement a system of play and/or style of instruction as directed by the head coach.
  • Maintain a standard of care by modeling safety training and basic athletic training skills.
  • Exercise professionalism and positive coaching behaviors.
  • Serve as an example of sportsmanship and ethical behavior.
  • Report violations and ejections immediately following the contest.
  • Attend evaluations and meet regularly with the head coach to discuss program goals.
  • Manage program equipment and supplies, and request essential program needs through the head coach.
  • Participate in fundraising activities as discussed with the head coach.

Requirements

  • At least 19 years of age to apply for assistant coaching positions.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior sport-specific playing and/or coaching experience in a secondary and/or post-secondary athletics program and/or related club coaching experience.
  • Proven training and experience in the presentation of drills, safety factors, and proper application of skills.

Qualifications

  • Two or more years of paid high school and/or post-secondary sport-specific coaching experience and/or related club coaching experience.
  • Completion of the National Federation Coaching Fundamentals Course to include passing the test.
  • Criminal background clearance.
  • First Aid and CPR certification (must be hands-on training).
  • Online Concussion Training (CT).

Skills

  • Ability to organize and administer a sport-specific athletics program at each level of the program.
  • Knowledge of league and WIAA rules and regulations.
  • Record keeping and report preparation.
  • Compliance with school board policies and procedures.
  • Effective communication and customer relations.
  • Confidentiality and ethical standards.
