About the Role

To maintain an attractive, sanitary and safe facility and ensure a clean and safe environment for students, staff, and the public by cleaning designated areas, using a variety of cleaning materials and equipment, and minimizing property damage, loss, and liability exposure.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans assigned school facilities (e.g., classrooms, offices, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, grounds, cafeteria, storage areas, etc.) to maintain a sanitary, safe, and attractive environment.
  • Arranges furnishings and equipment to provide adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities, and special events.
  • Attends service training (e.g., blood borne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, first aid, maintenance training, etc.) to receive information on new and/or improved procedures.
  • Evaluates situations involving staff, students, parents, or the public to take appropriate action and/or direct personnel for resolution.
  • Inspects school facilities to ensure the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and to identify necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, or weather conditions.
  • Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g., cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops, etc.) to ensure availability for proper facility maintenance.
  • Paints interior of classrooms, offices, restrooms, etc. to maintain an attractive facility.
  • Repairs furniture and equipment (e.g., faucets, toilets, light fixtures, etc.) to ensure items are available and in safe working condition.
  • Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, injured and ill students, alarms, etc.) to resolve issues and maintain a functioning educational environment.
  • Secures facilities and grounds to minimize property damage, equipment loss, and potential liability.
  • Ensures all emergency lighting, fire extinguishers, and playground equipment are maintained in proper working condition as required by local, state, and federal policies.
  • Removes snow and ice from designated areas.
  • Regulates furnaces, heating systems, air conditioning, and ventilating systems for the comfort and safety of occupants; replaces filters as necessary.
  • Empties trash and garbage containers for the building and cafeteria and removes them to designated areas.
  • Raises and lowers the United States, State, and other required agency flags daily.
  • Performs marginal functions such as hauling trash, mowing grass, chopping weeds, and trimming shrubs.
  • Assists other personnel to support the completion of their work activities.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic operational characteristics, services, and activities of a school district housekeeping program.
  • Knowledge of basic principles and practices of housekeeping duties.
  • Knowledge of English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematical principles.
  • Ability to learn equipment use and care, storage, and record keeping.
  • Ability to learn institutional housekeeping duties.
  • Ability to learn to operate basic housekeeping equipment and machinery (e.g., vacuum cleaner and carpet cleaning equipment).
  • Ability to learn to accurately apply mathematical principles.
  • Ability to learn to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing in the English language.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to maintain mental capacity for making sound decisions and demonstrating intellectual capabilities.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.

Qualifications

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

  • Experience: Some general custodial experience desirable.
  • Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade (High School Diploma or GED).
  • License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid New Mexico driver's license.

Pay

Minimum Salary: $33,881.00
Maximum Salary: $40,934.00

Schedule

Work Hours: 7.5 hours/day
Contract Length: 236 days

Working Conditions

  • Environmental Conditions: Office, shop, and school environment; exposure to cleaning and/or sterilization chemicals, airborne particles, and vibration; exposure to loud noise; frequently works in outside weather conditions.
  • Physical Conditions: Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate to extremely heavy carrying, lifting, and pushing; reaching, climbing in high, precarious places, crawling, sitting, kneeling, standing, and walking for extended periods of time; operation of motor vehicles; and subject to random drug testing.
