About the Role
Provides support to the instructional program within an assigned classroom with specific responsibility for working with individual and/or small groups of students; and providing clerical support to teacher/s and staff.
Responsibilities
- Uses fluency in English and a language other than English to assist English Language Learner (ELL) students in learning academic content, language, and adjusting to U.S. schools.
- Assists ELL students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments (e.g., read stories, provide writing assistance, reinforce language skills, numbers, alphabet, computer learning programs, etc.) to practice and/or reinforce learning concepts and help students reach academic goals and grade-level standards.
- Communicates and collaborates with teachers to evaluate progress and/or implement classroom objectives.
- Facilitates cooperative work and cross-cultural understanding between ELL students and native English speakers in the classroom.
- Provides feedback to the teacher regarding ELL students' progress and challenges in learning academic content, language, and adjusting to U.S. schools.
- Monitors individual and/or groups of students in various settings (e.g., classroom, playground, field trips) to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
- Performs general clerical tasks (e.g., laminating, making posters, making copies, bulletin boards, filing, newsletters) to help the teacher prepare instructional materials.
- Reports observations and incidents relating to specific students (e.g., accidents, fights, appropriate/inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, safety conditions) to appropriate instructional and/or administrative personnel.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- May be required to work at an alternative site in the event of a health crisis or disruptive situation that requires school/office building closures.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required, plus one of the following:
- Completed at least 48 credit hours of college study
- Passed the OGET test
- Pass the Education Testing Service Parapro Assessment Test (passing score is 455)
- Workkeys Assessment (passing score is 3 or better on all three parts)
- Must obtain OSDE Paraprofessional Credential ($10 fee).
- Successfully completed the Bilingual Skills Test administered through OKCPS.
- Demonstrated ability to fluently speak, write, read, and comprehend multiple languages.
- Operates standard office equipment, including pertinent software applications.
- Performs basic math; reads manuals; writes documents following prescribed formats; presents information to others; understands complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.
- Specific knowledge-based competencies: concepts of grammar and punctuation; stages of child development and learning styles; age-appropriate activities.
- Ability to schedule activities; collate data; use job-related equipment; work with diverse individuals and data; problem-solve to identify issues and create action plans.
- Specific ability-based competencies: flexibility; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; working as part of a team; working with constant interruptions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with students whose primary language is not English.
Physical/Mental Requirements
- Adequate manual dexterity to write legibly and perform required duties on the computer.
- Adequate visual acuity to read, interpret, and transcribe written material.
- Normal range of hearing and clear speaking abilities to interact appropriately with others in person and on the telephone.
- Requires some stooping, bending, stretching, and occasional lifting not to exceed 25 pounds.
- Sitting for prolonged periods of time.
- May periodically require work outside of normal business hours, including weekends, under sometimes stressful conditions to meet business needs and strict deadlines.
Work Environment
Office duties will be performed in a well-lighted, climate-controlled environment.
