About the role
Under the supervision of an administrator and general direction of a classroom teacher, assists students with severe disabilities to meet their physical and emotional requirements throughout the instructional day; assists the teacher with record keeping and performs a variety of instructional support duties in developing life skills and/or physical care activities. The work need not be performed in the presence of the teacher, but the teacher retains responsibility for instruction and supervision.
Distinguishing characteristics: Paraeducators work in special education settings where students have behavior, emotional, physical, language/communication, or learning disabilities. May spend a substantial portion of their time providing intervention to students who exhibit disruptive, aggressive, depressive, and/or self-injurious behaviors.
Schedule
- 9.5-month work year
- 5.75 hours per day, 5 days a week
Pay
$21.33 to $25.97 per hour
Responsibilities
- Assist students with severe disabilities to meet physical and emotional needs during the instructional day
- Support classroom teacher with record keeping and instructional duties
- Develop life skills and physical care activities for students
- Provide intervention for students exhibiting disruptive, aggressive, depressive, or self-injurious behaviors
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Courses and/or in-service in psychology, behavior modification, and related fields (desirable but not required)
- Willingness to complete required training courses or in-service upon employment
- One of the following:
- A.A. degree (foreign degrees must be evaluated by a CTC-approved agency)
- 48 units beyond high school diploma
- Successful completion of the District Instructional Assistant Proficiency Test in reading, math, and writing (per Federal No Child Left Behind Act)
- Experience in the care of children with learning disabilities and/or emotional disturbances (preferred)
- Training in crisis intervention (highly desirable)
Post-offer requirements
- DOJ and FBI Criminal Background Check
- TB Test within the last 60 days (Education Code 49406, Assembly Bill 1667)
- Complete district-mandated training (e.g., Mandated Reporter, Sexual Harassment)
- Obtain and maintain a First Aid/CPR Certificate (in-person training only)
- Pre-employment physical evaluation conducted through the District (minimum 50-pound lifting requirement)
Physical demands
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with or without aids
- Sufficient strength to lift non-ambulatory students, move adaptive equipment, and physically restrain/control a student up to 200 pounds with assistance
- Body movement and mobility to demonstrate gross motor activities, climb in/out of vehicles, walk/run with students, and maneuver students into/out of vehicles, wheelchairs, and toilets
- Sufficient vision to read printed material (with or without aids)
- Sufficient hearing to understand normal and telephone conversations (with or without aids)
- Ability to speak in an understandable voice with sufficient volume
- Manual dexterity to write and use office equipment
- Occasional: lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions
