Position Summary

Manassas Park City Schools is seeking an Instructional Assistant – Adaptive Special Education Curriculum to support the academic and social-emotional growth of students with special needs. This role works closely with certified special education teachers to implement instructional plans, monitor student progress, and foster an inclusive learning environment.

Essential Job Responsibilities and Duties

  • Complies with all school laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Confers with teachers to evaluate special education student progress and implement IEP objectives.
  • Implements academic instruction for individuals or small groups.
  • Implements behavioral plans for students with behavior challenges or special conditions.
  • Supports students with daily personal care tasks, ensuring their comfort and dignity.
  • Instructs special education students on various subjects, including math, science, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing, and verbal skills.
  • Maintains instructional materials and student files/records.
  • Makes observations and records student progress.
  • Supervises students during lunch, playground, and life enrichment activities.
  • Carries out instructional plans as directed by the special education teacher.
  • Assists in the preparation of instructional materials and classroom equipment.
  • Supports classroom teacher in maintaining a positive learning environment.
  • Performs clerical duties as assigned.
  • Attends in-service and workshop meetings as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

  • Operates in a professional school environment that includes classrooms, gymnasiums, cafeterias, auditoriums, and outdoor learning/recreational areas.
  • Requires frequent walking, standing, and movement throughout the school day.
  • Occasional climbing, kneeling, or crouching may be required.
  • Periods of sitting are common while preparing lessons, grading assignments, or completing administrative tasks.
  • Lifts or moves instructional materials, classroom supplies, or equipment weighing up to 10 pounds on a regular basis and occasionally up to 25 pounds or more.
  • Regular use of computers, interactive whiteboards, projectors, printers, and other instructional technologies is required.
  • Clear verbal communication, active listening, and visual attentiveness are essential for delivering instruction and ensuring student safety.
  • Daily interaction with students and regular collaboration with colleagues, administrators, and families.
  • Occasional travel between school sites or participation in supervised field trips may be required.
