2026-2027 Health and Physical Education Teacher

Starting salary range: $58,414–$105,697 (commensurate with experience). Sign-on bonus available. 10-month (200-day) contract.

About the Role

Teaches physical fitness, health education, rhythms, dance, and individual, dual, or team sports using the division’s curriculum and state standards. Works collaboratively with other physical education teachers to plan and deliver a balanced program.

Responsibilities

• Analyze, demonstrate, and explain basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and body-movement fundamentals.
• Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials aligned with district instructional philosophy and Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL).
• Provide individualized and small-group instruction to meet diverse student needs.
• Establish and maintain classroom behavior standards to ensure an orderly, productive environment.
• Conduct safety checks on equipment and field areas; provide appropriate safety instruction.
• Evaluate student growth in physical skills, knowledge, and teamwork; prepare report cards and maintain attendance and other required records.
• Communicate regularly with parents and school counselors regarding student progress.
• Supervise students outside the classroom during assigned work hours.
• Administer assessments in accordance with division testing practices.
• Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
• Deliver an instructional program aligned with school district goals and objectives.
• Manage student behavior to create a safe, effective learning environment.
• Translate lesson plans into engaging learning experiences, utilizing available instructional time effectively.
• Assess student learning continuously and adapt instructional methods to meet individual needs.
• Pursue professional development through seminars, workshops, or research.
• Maintain accurate, complete records of student activities, achievement, and attendance as required by district procedures and laws.
• Encourage parental involvement and maintain open communication with families.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local education laws and policies.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in physical education.
• Knowledge of current teaching methods, differentiated instruction, and educational pedagogy.
• Demonstrated ability in decision-making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, and planning.
• Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
• Strong organizational and coordination skills.
• Effective communication with students, parents, and colleagues.
• Commitment to self-evaluation and professional growth.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Working Conditions

• Primarily works in a school/classroom environment; occasional field trips.
• Moderate noise level.
• Physical demands include sitting and standing for extended periods, manual dexterity for computer/data entry, and the ability to lift up to 25 pounds, bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
• Must be able to see, read, hear, and speak clearly in classroom, outdoor, and telephone settings.
