About the role

This is a part-time food-service position for the 2026-2027 school year, beginning in August 2026.

Responsibilities

  • Follow procedures in food preparation, use and care of equipment, and personal habits to meet sanitation standards required by the Child Nutrition Services Office and Virginia Department of Health.
  • Adhere to safety standards in preparing, storing, and serving food as mandated by the Child Nutrition Services Office and Virginia Department of Health.
  • Serve customers promptly and courteously using correct portion sizes; ensure food is attractive and appealing; maintain food temperature on the serving line and keep the line clean.
  • Process customers accurately, ensuring confidentiality of students’ lunch status; count money, make change, and reconcile the cash drawer at the end of the day.
  • Operate the dish-room: rinse trays and utensils, wash them through the dish machine, and verify cleanliness before returning them to the serving lines; clean the dish machine and dispose of trash as assigned.
  • Clean assigned work areas, including sweeping, mopping, walls, ovens, mixers, tables, steamers, kettles, dish machines, warmers, and utensils.
  • Maintain required forms and records as directed by the manager.
  • Attend job-related training classes and workshops.
  • Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and write in English and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Food Handlers card.
  • Adherence to the dress code outlined in the Child Nutrition Services Handbook.
  • Commitment to putting forth best effort in all assigned duties.
  • Ability to follow safety precautions to avoid minor injuries such as cuts, falls, bruises, burns, and scalds.
  • Ability to complete written forms and records.
