2026-2027 Art Teacher

About the Role

This position is responsible for creating a classroom environment that fosters creative expression in visual terms, using skills and techniques appropriate to students' interests and abilities, and for discovering and developing students' talents in the field of art.

Responsibilities

• Teaches art courses using the curriculum designated by Newport News Public Schools and other appropriate learning activities.
• Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter as specified by state law and administrative regulations.
• Develops lesson plans to include a balanced art program and organizes daily class time efficiently.
• Adapts curriculum to provide individual, small group, or remedial instruction aligned with division’s instructional philosophy and course/SOL standards.
• Demonstrates techniques in drawing, painting, and modeling using standard and teacher-prepared instructional aids.
• Evaluates academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, and maintains records such as attendance, checklists, and census forms.
• Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to ensure an orderly, productive classroom environment.
• Instructs students in the proper care and use of tools and equipment.
• Identifies student needs and collaborates with professional staff to address learning, health, and attitude challenges.
• Communicates with parents and school counselors regarding student progress.
• Supervises students during assigned out-of-classroom activities.
• Participates in faculty committees and sponsors student activities.
• Plans and presents art displays and exhibitions to showcase student work for the school and community.
• Administers testing in accordance with division practices.
• Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

Other Duties

• Maintains professional competence through staff development programs, curriculum meetings, and other professional activities.
• Participates in student and parent activities, including PTA, student clubs, and after-school programs.
• Creates an effective learning environment through displays, bulletin boards, and activity/learning centers.
• Performs other related duties as assigned by the Principal or appropriate administrator.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in education or a related field.
• Must meet Virginia Department of Education licensure eligibility requirements to teach art.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit and stand for extended periods.
• Manual dexterity to dial a telephone, enter data into a computer, and handle art materials.
• Ability to see and read a computer screen and printed material, with or without vision aids.
• Ability to hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone.
• Ability to speak in audible tones for clear communication in classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone.
• Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds, bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.

Work Environment

Duties are primarily performed in a school/classroom environment, with occasional field trips. The noise level is usually moderate.
