About the Role

1x1 architecture was engaged by Public Services and Procurement Canada to transform a 13,500 sq.ft. conference center at the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge for Global Affairs Canada, in preparation for hosting the G7 Leader’s Summit. The design aimed to create a retreat-style environment fostering intimate, goal-oriented dialogue among leaders, with a focus on "fireside moments" to promote community and unity.

Design Concept

The design drew inspiration from the surrounding Kananaskis Mountain Range, incorporating dramatic peaks and inverted angles into the main Outreach Room. An inverted, angled ceiling slopes toward the center, creating an intimate scale and focusing attention on the leaders at the conference table. Sixteen-foot-high rough-sawn spruce timbers, sourced from Canmore, Alberta, as part of a firebreak initiative, were used to visually extend the space into the landscape and emphasize verticality. These materials highlight Canada’s forestry stewardship, sustainability, and the softwood lumber industry.

Materials and Details

  • Robust materials like spruce, fir, and oak were chosen for their strength and permanence, providing a durable backdrop for the Summit.
  • Custom Dolomitic Limestone (Tyndall Stone) furniture establishes a connection to Canadian Parliamentary buildings and architectural identity.
  • Subtle gold metallic finishes reference the "Gold Ballroom" from the 1988 Calgary Olympics, adding visual interest and spectacle.
  • Thoughtfully curated Canadian content, including local makers and designers, promotes Canadian culture and design throughout the space.
