About the Role
Perform various welding and cutting tasks using gas and electric welding equipment to fabricate steel with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities
- Perform FCAW (2G) welding and pass a 2G test on a 1” thick coupon.
- Pass a 2G test in SMAW using group 4 electrodes on a 3/8” coupon.
- Operate air arc to remove steel (back gouging).
- Grind with a 90° angle grinder.
- Operate a pendent-controlled bridge crane safely and efficiently.
- Read weld symbols and check weld size using weld fillet gauges.
- Heat material to required temperatures using temperature sticks and heating/cutting torches, following pre-heat and interpass temperature tables.
- Set machines according to procedure charts.
- Use an air chipper to remove slag.
- Operate natural gas tube heaters to pre-heat steel.
- Operate a stud welder.
- Follow weld procedures for volts, amps, and wire feed speed.
- Heat, straighten, and determine when to use pre-heat to offset distortion.
- Meet the requirements of Class “C” and “B” welders with greater efficiency.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements
- High school education or equivalent.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs over shoulder height.
- Ability to read blueprints.
- FCAW (2G) and SMAW (2G) certification or proficiency.
- Ability to read weld symbols and familiarity with weld procedures.
- Familiarity with WP1 (manual shielded metal arc welding of carbon steel), WP2 (flux-cored arc welding of carbon steel), and WP3 (flux-cored arc welding with gas shielding of carbon steel).
Preferred Qualifications
- Two or more years’ experience in manufacturing, specifically in the steel fabrication industry.

Proficiency in using the following tools and equipment is necessary:
- Air arc
- 90° angle grinder
- Crane
- Heating torch
- Cutting torch
