Candidates with a background in neurology or neuro-oncology are preferred. Relevant experience in these fields is essential.
The Nurse Practitioner is accountable for facilitating quality hospital experience and outcomes for patients within a cost-effective time frame.
The Nurse Practitioner will report to the Medical Director of Patient Services and be responsible for overseeing the progress of a specific caseload of patients across the care continuum, including pre-admission and post-discharge when feasible.
Acts as an educator, consultant, and liaison to healthcare providers caring for patients across the care continuum.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Demonstrates a fundamental grounding in nursing theory and practice with mastery of knowledge within a defined content area.
- Manages a caseload of patients in partnership with the healthcare team to optimize health status and coordinate care over time and across healthcare settings.
- Provides leadership in the development, validation, implementation, and evaluation of standards, policies, procedures, and critical paths to support the patient care delivery model.
- Oversees care coordination in acute, home care, and ambulatory care settings as feasible.
- Assists the healthcare team to achieve mutually agreed upon healthcare goals by providing necessary support, education, and encouragement.
- Demonstrates advanced physical and psychosocial assessment skills and knowledge of family dynamics.
- Provides direct care to patients in acute care, ambulatory care, and home care settings.
- Performs advanced practice skills under the supervision of the Medical Director.
- Provides expert consultation for clinical issues, promoting increased knowledge and skills for the consultee.
- Participates in education, clinical research, and mentoring of healthcare providers.
- Facilitates patient/family education in the area of expertise.
- Performs minor procedures, including lumbar puncture and intrathecal chemotherapy, under the guidance of overseeing physicians.
- Participates in multidisciplinary meetings with departments of radiation and neurosurgery.
- Annually completes mandatory safety infection control, BLS, and ACLS/PALS. Prescriptive privileges per licensure.
BASIC KNOWLEDGE
- Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
- Masters of Science Degree, Graduate of accredited Nurse Practitioner program. Specialty certification required.
- Baccalaureate in Nursing
- Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS).
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
EXPERIENCE
- Preferred qualifications include experience in Neuro-Oncology or Neurology.
- Candidates should have at least 2 years of relevant experience as a registered nurse in an acute care hospital setting, with an additional preference for 1-2 years of clinical practice as a nurse practitioner.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- General hospital environment with occasional stressful conditions associated with patient care.
