About the role

The Veteran Program Counselor provides trauma-informed, evidence-based behavioral health services to military Veterans, Service Members, and their families under the supervision of the Director of Specialty Programs. This position delivers comprehensive mental health assessments, diagnostic evaluations, crisis intervention, individual and group counseling, and individualized treatment planning to promote recovery, resiliency, and overall wellness.

Responsibilities

  • Delivers comprehensive mental health assessments, diagnostic evaluations, crisis intervention, individual and group counseling, and individualized treatment planning to promote recovery, resiliency, and overall wellness.
  • Serves as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team, providing counseling services to Veterans and their families through in-person and tele-video appointments.
  • Provides services including intake assessments, risk evaluations, evidence-based psychotherapies, crisis response, and ongoing therapeutic interventions using approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and other evidence-based practices appropriate to the individual’s needs.
  • Collaborates with internal programs, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Texas Veterans Commission (TVC), Veteran Treatment Courts, community providers, medical facilities, law enforcement, and other community organizations to coordinate care, facilitate referrals, and improve access to behavioral health and supportive services.
  • Participates in community education, outreach, engagement activities, and Veteran-focused events to increase awareness of available services and strengthen community partnerships.
  • May provide consultation to staff, contribute to program development, and support quality improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Advanced licensure (LPC, LCSW, LMFT) to provide clinical counseling Texas.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, recovery-oriented environment.
  • Ability to build meaningful connections with individuals served.
  • A valid Texas driver’s license and ability to maintain approved driver status throughout employment.
  • Six months of providing mental health or substance use wellness and recovery support services specifically to the military population.

Qualifications

  • Current licensure as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC).
  • One year of experience in providing trauma-informed care in a dedicated mental health setting.
  • Familiarity with the VA or the Veterans Health Administration network.

Pay

Hourly Salary Range: $31.80 – $37.55 Differential Detail $0.75/hr Bilingual$1.00/hour Career Ladder SpecialtyUp to $4.00/hour – Tenure with BTCS

Schedule

This position requires a flexible work schedule, Monday through Friday, with the majority of services provided remotely. Onsite work, community outreach, court participation, and in-person services are required based on clinical needs, program requirements, and community partnerships.
