1017 - Equipment Specialist

About the role

The Equipment Specialist at Overland Contracting Inc. operates various types of power construction equipment to perform excavation, moving, and grading tasks. The role requires adherence to safety protocols and effective communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Engage in safety-related processes and programs
• Ensure zero injuries through teamwork and safety awareness
• Report and investigate accidents and near-misses
• Identify and address safety hazards
• Follow lockout/tagout procedures and adhere to safety rules
• Communicate effectively and listen to co-workers
• Coordinate with other trades and train helpers
• Inspect and correct work to meet industry standards
• Operate and inspect equipment daily
• Comply with company policies and conduct regular inspections

Requirements

• Multiple years of heavy equipment operation experience
• Working knowledge of equipment operating limits and safety practices
• Commercial driver’s license for public road operations
• At least 18 years of age

Qualifications

• NCCER certifications in Heavy Equipment Operations, Highway/Heavy Construction, Rigger, and Site Layout
• Strong understanding of contract plans and specifications
• Ability to visualize and lay out equipment in three dimensions
• Effective verbal and written communication skills

Management Responsibilities

• Coordinate with other trades and train helpers
• Provide on-the-job training and mentoring
• Develop a complete understanding of contract plans and specifications
• Inspect helper's work for compliance with plans, specifications, and industry standards
• Notify supervisors of hazards and utilize safety stop work authority
• Examine and inspect field conditions for problems and cost-saving measures
• Operate and inspect equipment daily
• Comply with company policies and conduct regular inspections

Work Environment/Physical Demands

• Lift and carry heavy items up to 50 pounds
• Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, move in and around confined and cluttered places, and uneven areas
• See and hear naturally or with correction
• Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls according to a set procedure
• Repeat movements
• Climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds
• Work up to a 12-hour shift doing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and other outside conditions
• Work around hazardous equipment
