About the role

Canyon View Middle School is seeking a ½-contract Secondary Special Education Educator. This role provides students with learning, cognitive, or physical disabilities individually tailored instruction, counseling, and learning experiences to help them progress toward educational goals established with their limitations in mind. The educator monitors and evaluates outcomes, assists in developing Individual Education Programs (IEPs), and supports students in both academic and social development.

Responsibilities

• Determine specific learning problems, skill deficiencies, or social adjustment difficulties of students and initiate remediation programs.
• Evaluate each student in terms of initial needs and progress toward remediation.
• Develop and present appropriate IEP goals.
• Prepare progress reports, year-end evaluations, and administer pre-tests and post-tests as needed.
• Provide a wide range of teaching materials and equipment, including reading materials at various levels, instructional games, and resource materials.
• Counsel students in identifying and addressing academic and social challenges.
• Provide opportunities for students to explore life and career goals.
• Tutor students for other classes.
• Establish and maintain standards of individual student behavior; collaborate with other teachers to support satisfactory class work, homework, and behavior.
• Help parents understand the challenges of educationally handicapped students, program goals, and student progress.
• Participate in the selection and evaluation of students for admission to the special education program.
• Engage in case conferences about students with diverse learning needs.
• Perform attendance accounting and record-keeping functions pertinent to the special education program.
• Stay current with new developments in the field by reading journals, attending professional meetings, and discussing mutual interests with peers.
• Evaluate special education needs to ensure student objectives are met.
• Interpret laws, rules, and regulations for students, parents, and paraprofessionals.
• Prepare reports for federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.
• Administer achievement tests to measure student performance.
• Maintain IEP files and monitor compliance.
• Assist students with daily living skills such as toileting and social interaction.
• Address students' behavioral needs.
