(1.0) Teacher of Moderately Cognitively Impaired Students

About the role

The teacher of the cognitively impaired will work in a multidistrict program within Livonia Public Schools, supporting students eligible under cognitive impairment. The position requires a deep understanding of intervention and classroom management techniques, as well as the ability to implement best practices in instruction and student achievement.

Responsibilities

• Create and maintain a welcoming, engaging, and positive classroom climate and culture.
• Develop lesson plans and instructional materials, providing individualized and small group instruction tailored to the needs of each student.
• Evaluate students through formal and informal assessment methods, focusing on identifying strengths and challenges.
• Implement daily activities that align with the developmental needs of the student population.
• Maintain positive relationships with parents and the broader community.
• Use current special education evidence-based practices and functional communication systems.
• Provide assistance in developing and implementing Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
• Monitor and communicate progress towards Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.
• Collaborate with other professionals to assess and assist students.
• Communicate regularly with students, parents, and school counselors about student progress.
• Administer and monitor IEP accommodations and progress monitoring on IEP goals and objectives.
• Supervise and oversee classroom staff and students throughout the assigned workday.
• Teach life and career skills, including self-care, essential elements, activities of daily living, social/emotional development, leisure time, personal adjustment, and work skills.

Requirements

• A valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with endorsement in Special Education (SA).
• Commitment to securing full certification as soon as possible.
• A demonstrated passion for improving learning for all students.
• Positive interpersonal relationships and strong communication skills.
• Knowledge of the Essential Elements and TeachTown Curriculum.
• Ability to establish positive working relationships with all stakeholders.
• Experience with positive behavioral supports and interventions.
