1.0 Probationary Special Education Teacher (8:1:1) -Maple West Elem

This is a ten-month position. Participation in a special education summer school (6 weeks, full academic day) is strongly encouraged.

Qualifications

• NYS Certification Special Education B-12 required.
• Experience in Special Education K-12, with comprehensive knowledge of working with students who present with significant learning delays, difficulties managing behavior, coping with frustration, following multi-step directions, and/or regulating emotion.
• Knowledge of a variety of disabilities, including Learning Disabilities, Speech and Language Impairments, Other Health Impairments, and Autism, and how these disabilities impact a student's learning progress, functioning, and behavior.
• Demonstrated skill in Functional Behavioral Assessments, development and implementation of Behavioral Intervention Plans, and strong skills in data collection.
• Well-developed written and oral communication skills, with proven ability to interact positively with students, parents, and colleagues.
• Ability to work effectively as a member of a collaborative team, schedule and coordinate a variety of service providers, and possess effective case management and resource management skills.
• Demonstrated experience in differentiated instruction, modifying curriculum, and applying research-based instructional approaches when teaching students with disabilities.
• Experience implementing and addressing toileting needs, and assisting with lifting and/or positioning.
• Strong working knowledge of Federal and State Mandates pertaining to developmental disabilities.
• Strong work ethic and positive attitude to support students, teammates, colleagues, and families, with the ability to remain flexible and respond effectively to emergent classroom situations.

Responsibilities

• Provide content area instruction to students in a self-contained classroom in accordance with curricular expectations and Individualized Education Plans.
• Articulate specific learning challenges, skill deficiencies, or social adjustment difficulties as exhibited by students and identify appropriate remediation to facilitate student regulation, behaviors, and academic achievement.
• Evaluate and monitor each student’s progress toward attainment of specific learning goals.
• Coordinate efforts of the instructional and support team.
• Develop behavioral intervention plans, monitor behavior, develop appropriate intervention strategies, and track progress.
• Develop Individualized Education Plans, integrated goals, and track progress through data.
• Facilitate the inclusion of students with disabilities in the general education environment.
• Coordinate the provision of various related services and work collaboratively with treatment providers, general education teachers, support staff, and administration.
• Provide appropriate training to classroom staff regarding the needs of individual students.
• Communicate with parents and other professional and support members, including agency representatives specializing in the management, instruction, and behaviors of elementary-aged students.
• Other responsibilities as assigned by Building Administration, the Director of Special Education, or the Assistant Superintendent for Exceptional Education and Student Services.

Pay

$47,200 - $53,700 per WTA Contract
