About the role
The Chemical & Waste Specialist reports directly to the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Manager. This role ensures efficient assembly processes and strict adherence to Texas state and federal environmental laws.
Responsibilities
- Texas Waste Management & EHS Compliance
- Waste Life-Cycle Tracking: Oversee daily collection, proper segregation, labeling, and secure storage of process waste (spent solvents, lead dross, chemical wipes).
- TCEQ & RCRA Tracking: Partner with the EHS Manager to utilize the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) STEERS system to maintain the facility's Notice of Registration (NOR) and track waste streams using Texas-specific 8-digit waste codes.
- Manifests & Reporting: Prepare uniform hazardous waste manifests for transport and log data for the mandatory Annual Waste Summary (AWS).
- Audit & Emergency Support: Assist the EHS Manager during routine safety audits, maintain on-site waste accumulation areas within legal time limits, and serve as a key member of the local spill response team.
- Line Chemistry & Production Support
- Chemical Storage: Monitor secure storage locations and distribution of chemicals used in wave soldering, selective soldering, and surface mount technology (SMT) cleaning systems.
- Quality Control: Track expiration dates of critical chemicals and adjust inventory as needed.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: High School Diploma or Associate’s Degree in a science/technical field.
- Preferred Experience: 1–3 years of hands-on experience in electronics manufacturing, an industrial chemical environment, or dedicated waste handling.
- Certifications: Must possess—or be willing to obtain within 90 days of hire—initial RCRA hazardous waste and DOT hazardous materials shipping certifications.
- Technical Skills: Familiarity with basic electronic assembly guidelines (e.g., IPC-A-610) and comfortable wearing appropriate PPE for extended periods.
Physical Demands
- Duties of this position are performed in a normal office environment.
- Duties may require extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data.
- Repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, using a computer mouse, using a calculator, etc.) are frequently required.
- Some travel may be required.
