About the Role
Perform a combination of equipment operations, preventive maintenance, and manual labor tasks related to roadway maintenance. Serve as an essential employee for emergency roadway operations.
Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment for maintenance, construction, and emergency tasks, including snow and ice removal.
- Clear roadways of snow, ice, debris, and accident aftermath; provide traffic control.
- Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques, identify safety hazards, and suggest improvements.
- Wear proper personal protection equipment and maintain knowledge of current safety rules (OSHA, VOSHA, MUTCD).
- Use equipment safely and apply traffic control standards for detours, lane closures, and work zones.
- Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work environment; follow VDOT safety regulations.
- Participate as a working crew member to complete manual labor and maintenance tasks using hand and power tools.
- Perform preventive maintenance, repairs, and pre-trip inspections for vehicles and equipment.
- Install, maintain, and remove traffic control devices in assigned areas per MUTCD guidelines.
- Assist in tracking inventory and maintaining records.
Requirements
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions, read work plans, and complete accurate documentation.
- Ability to maintain inventory records and complete simple paperwork.
- Obtain a valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter; comply with DOT and VDOT policies.
- Ability to operate and maintain hand, power tools, and light to heavy-duty highway equipment.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
- Knowledge of work zone safety, traffic controls, and flagging operations (MUTCD).
- Knowledge of federal and state regulations for traffic control devices.
- Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
- Safety shoes required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Combination of training, experience, or education in Maintenance, Vehicle Operations, or related field.
- Experience in emergency operations (snow removal, storms, accident clean-up).
- Experience in roadway maintenance and construction.
- Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements.

This role involves physical demands consistent with highway maintenance work, including heavy manual labor, equipment operation, and adherence to safety standards.
