About the Role

Repair, maintain, and replace bridges and structures in accordance with established safety standards, VDOT specifications and procedures, and equipment operation standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform a combination of skilled tasks including carpentry, welding, and concrete finishing.
• Remove and install structural components to erect, replace, or demolish structures.
• Place temporary bridges and remove damaged structures during emergency operations.
• Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other emergency operations.
• Clear roadways of snow, ice, and debris; clean up after accidents; and provide traffic control.
• Apply appropriate in-stream and environmental protection measures during all structural maintenance and construction activities.
• Operate light and medium-duty highway equipment to perform maintenance and construction-related tasks.
• Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques; identify workplace safety hazards and suggest improvements.
• Wear personal protection equipment and maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures (OSHA, VOSHA, etc.).
• Apply MUTCD standards for detours, lane closures, and work zones.
• Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work environment; follow VDOT safety regulations and practices.
• Perform manual labor as a working member of the crew to complete projects.
• Assist in the construction, repair, and maintenance of timber, steel, and concrete bridge elements and other structures.
• Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and tools.
• Transport personnel, equipment, and materials to and from work sites.
• Ensure all equipment is properly and safely maintained; complete pre-trip inspections.

Requirements

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to obtain a valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter; must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts.
• Ability to perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools.
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to work at heights, in heavy traffic, over and in water, and under other adverse conditions.
• Ability to work well individually and as a team member.
• Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials, and safety practices.
• Skill in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding.
• Skill in fabricating steel components.
• Skill in the operation and use of light and medium-duty equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, and backhoes.
• Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
• Safety shoes required.

Qualifications

A combination of training, experience, or education in Construction or a related field is desired. Additional considerations include:

• Experience fabricating or welding steel components.
• Experience in bridge maintenance or construction.
• Experience in carpentry, building forms and false works, and concrete placement and finishing.
• Experience with light to medium-duty equipment and hand and power tools.
• Valid Flagger certification.
• Valid Certified Crane Operator with appropriate endorsements.
• Valid Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements.

Physical Requirements

This role requires the ability to perform heavy manual labor and work in adverse conditions, including at heights, in heavy traffic, over and in water.
