About the Role

Diagnose, repair, inspect and maintain motorized and mechanical equipment related to construction, highway maintenance, grounds, and automotive equipment of all types and in varied locations.

Responsibilities

• Diagnosis and Repair: Diagnose vehicle, equipment or asset failures using electronic testing equipment, service and repair manuals, and online resources. Recommend outsourcing for major repairs when needed.
• Emergency Operations: Prepare equipment for emergency operations. Make equipment repairs to reduce downtime during emergency operations, including on-the-road repairs.
• Information Processing and Paperwork: Prepare, process, and maintain required maintenance and repair documentation. Generate, complete, and close-out work orders in the computer system. Perform time and leave entry. Prepare parts requests. Complete paperwork for warranty inspections and repairs.
• Perform Repair Work: Perform repairs and overhauls to all types of automobiles, equipment, and tools, including engines, transmissions, driveline components, electrical and computer systems, fuel injection systems, air conditioning, heating and ventilation systems, hydraulic systems, pneumatic components, and air brakes.
• Preventive Maintenance: Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles, equipment, or assets according to the PM schedule and guidelines. Make repairs as needed when deficiencies are found or recommend outsourcing.
• Virginia State Inspections: Perform safety inspections under the guidelines of the Virginia State Police Inspection program for vehicles and equipment.
• Welding Repair and Fabrication: Design, fabricate, modify, and weld components to repair, rebuild, or replace parts.

Requirements

• Ability to coach and instruct others in diagnostic and repair techniques and in the operation of equipment.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to independently perform major repairs and maintenance on a variety of diesel and gasoline trucks and equipment.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
• Ability to obtain a valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
• Ability to obtain Virginia State Inspection License within 12 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
• Ability to operate various types of light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks, equipment, and tools in a safe and efficient manner.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to read and comprehend service and repair manuals, gauges, and testing devices.
• Ability to read, write, and perform basic math calculations.
• Knowledge of cutting, welding, and fabrication operations.
• Knowledge of general shop procedures.
• Knowledge of the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of automotive, construction, and maintenance equipment.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
• Skill in the use of hand and power tools and advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment.
• Safety shoes required.

Qualifications

• A combination of training, experience, or education in Automotive Repair, Maintenance, or a related field is desired.
• Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications.
• Experience repairing and maintaining a variety of automotive and construction equipment.
• Experience using cutting and welding equipment.
• Virginia State Inspection License - Class A.

VDOT employees must abide by VDOT’s Code of Ethics and the Commonwealth’s Standards of Conduct. Physical demands include the ability to perform heavy manual labor and operate various types of equipment safely.
